JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) raced to an 11-0 lead Friday afternoon over Dakota State (S.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Postseason Opening Round at Jack Brown Stadium.  The Comets never looked back for a 19-2 victory in seven innings over the Trojans.

Dakota State, No. 3 seed in the conference tournament dropped their overall record to 20-26.  Mayville State (N.D.), sixth-seeded team in the tournament, raised their overall record to 29-26.

Jose Guzman hit a 3-run home run in the opening inning as MSU stormed to a 3-0 lead.  Riley Nelson added an RBI single to extend Comets' lead to 4-0.

Mayville State added three more runs in the top second inning.  Dusty Dove hit an RBI double and Jalen Hashbarger hit 2-RBI single as Comets' lead grew to 7-0.

MSU plated four runs in the fourth inning for 11-0 lead, thanks to Guzman's solo home run, Hashbarger's 2-RBI triple and an RBI single by Mason Swegarden.

The Trojans ended their scoring drought with a pair of runs scored in the bottom fourth frame.  Tony Poncia led off with a walk.  He advanced to second base after Jake Harris' ground out.  Poncia swiped to third base.  Jacob Arlt hit an RBI single to score Poncia for Trojans' first run of the game.

Jamie Jorgensen followed up with a single and advanced Arlt to second base.  Shiquing Santana produced an RBI single to score Arlt as the Trojans trailed 11-2.

Mayville State continued its scoring surge with another four runs in the top fifth and seventh innings to widen their lead to 19-2.  The Comets ended the game in seven innings due to ten-run mercy rule.

Arlt and Santana each led the Trojans with a single and an RBI.  Jorgensen and Harris each added a hit.  Ponica swiped one base.

Guzman went 4-of-5 at the plate with two home runs, two singles and drove in five runs for the Comets.  Hashbarger added a triple, two singles and collected four RBIs.  Alex Ziegler, Dondrei Hubbard, Spencer Merle and Swegarden each added two hits.

MSU outhit DSU 21-4 in the game. 

Taylor Boerger (L, 3-5) took the loss after working the first 1 2/3 innings on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He gave up seven runs on eight hits.  Brady Wauer pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, followed by Luke Gassman for one out in the fifth inning and David Kirby with 2 2/3 innings.  Each pitcher allowed four runs.

Zachary Mohoney (W, 6-3) earned a complete game victory for the Comets.  He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out six DSU's batters.

Dakota State face an elimination game of the Bracket B portion of the NSAA Baseball Tournament, facing No. 7 seed Viterbo (Wis.) who lost to No. 2 seed Jamestown (N.D.) 15-2 Friday afternoon.  First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, N.D.
