DSU and NWIA battled through five ties and three lead changes in the first eight minutes of the game.  Leading by one point at 18-17, the Trojans went on a 6-0 scoring spurt by three different scorers (Ian Barse, Justin Folkers and Tanner Heiser) for a 24-17 lead with 10:37 remaining in the first-half.

The Red Raiders would answer back with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 26-26 with less than eight minutes in the first half.  At 30-30, the Trojans used another scoring run with a 13-4 outburst to grab a 43-34 lead with 3:05 on the clock after a 3-pointer by Heiser.

NWIA stormed back by scoring nine straight points to tie at 43-43 with less than a minute to go before halftime.  Nathaniel Rauen made a basket with 34 seconds remaining, holding a 45-43 halftime advantage for the Trojans.

After DSU opened up a four-point lead in the second-half, the Red Raiders went on a 16-8 run for a 59-53 lead with 14:49 remaining in the game.

When the Trojans trimmed NWIA's lead down to two points after a pair of free-throws by Brendon Boomsma (63-61 NWIA lead), Northwestern scored five straight points to gain the biggest lead of the second-half at 68-61 with 8:34 left.

Dakota State quickly responded back by scoring eight consecutive points, overtaking a 69-68 lead with 7:09 remaining.

Both teams tied or traded leads in the final 6:29 of the game.

Trailing 79-77, Boomsma made a lay-up to tie the game at 79-79 with less a minute to go in the game.  The Red Raiders then committed a turnover on the following possession, which was stolen by DSU's Adam Hofer and called timeout with 26.5 seconds left in the game.

Coming out from the timeout, Boomsma drove inside the paint and nailed down the game winning basket with less than four seconds remaining to give Dakota State an 81-79 lead.  The Trojans secured the thrilling victory after NWIA's Colton Kooima's 3-point shot near the half-court hit the rim and went behind the backboard.

A total of 15 ties and 11 lead changes were recorded in the game.  It was DSU's first win over Northwestern since Nov. 6, 2013.

Derek Meger led the Trojans with 25 points on his 12-of-16 shooting from the field.  Boomsma added 13 points.  Kyle Kilgore produced a double-double of 11 points – including a monstrous dunk late in the second half – and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Heiser had 10 points off the bench and stole the ball three times.  Hofer tallied six points and dished out six assists.  Folkers had eight points.
