August 3, 2016

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) basketball team annually plays one of the toughest schedules in the nation and the 2016-17 slate is no exception as 14 of DSU's 30 regular-season games are teams that had been either ranked in the NAIA's Top 25/receiving votes poll or qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National tournament last year.

Five of Dakota State's 2016-17 foes – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Briar Cliff (Iowa), York (Neb.), Bellevue (Neb.) and Valley City State (N.D.) – competed in the 2016 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.  The Trojans also will play a 16-game North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference schedule, where DSU has won the regular-season and postseason tournaments for the last two seasons.

It was the first time in program history that DSU has won back-to-back conference regular-season and postseason tournament titles.

Following with a scrimmage game versus NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines to be played in Chamberlain, S.D. on Oct. 22, Dakota State opens their 2016-17 campaign – under the guidance of eighth-year head coach Gary Garner who is currently holds the second-most coaching victories as Dakota State men's basketball head coach – with seven of the first eight games against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Dakota State looks to extend their seven-game home winning streak from last season as they open their 2016-17 schedule against Northwestern (Iowa) on Oct. 27.  This is the sixth consecutive year that the Trojans will open their season at DSU Fieldhouse.  DSU has won its season opener's game since Gary Garner became the head coach in 2009-10, as well as winning home record at DSU Fieldhosue each year.

The Trojans conclude their brief two-game home stand on Nov. 1 versus Dordt (Iowa).

Dakota State will join Presentation (S.D.), Mount Marty (S.D.) and Dakota Wesleyan in NAIA/South Dakota Pentagon Classic to be played in Sioux Falls.  DSU plays long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan on Nov. 5, followed by another game on Nov. 6 versus Mount Marty.

The Trojans return back home on Nov. 9, hosting Midland (Neb.) before going away from the DSU Fieldhouse for their next eight games on their schedule.

DSU visits Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Nov. 15.  Dakota State stays on the road that same week on Nov. 19, visiting Briar Cliff (Iowa) who advanced to last year's national tournament quarterfinals.

Dakota State plays a pair of GPAC opponents in the annual Draemel Classic during Thanksgiving break.  DSU faces Morningside (Iowa) on Nov. 26 and plays against Midland for the second meeting of the season on Nov. 27.

The Trojans kick off their first NSAA conference games on the road for two straight weeks, with the first stop at Presentation on Dec. 2 followed by Jamestown (N.D.) on Dec. 4.  DSU stays on the road on Dec. 9 at Valley City State and Dickinson State (N.D.) on Dec. 14.

Dakota State concludes their month-long road trip by returning home for another pair of NSAA conference games at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans host Waldorf (Iowa) on Dec. 16 and Viterbo (Wis.) on Dec. 17.

DSU will close out the calendar year with a pair of games in the Mike Miller Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. during Christmas break on Dec. 27-28.  The schedule and pairings have not been announced, but the Trojans will face York (Neb.) – NAIA Division II National Tournament's quarterfinalist last spring – and Southeastern (Fla.) of The Sun Conference.

The Trojans will ring in the New Year with a match-up against long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 2.

Dakota State returns back to NSAA conference action, visiting Mayville State (N.D.) on Jan. 6 and Bellevue on Jan. 14.  DSU begins their second-half portion of the NSAA conference schedule at home versus Jamestown on Jan. 20 and Presentation on Jan. 21.

DSU concludes its non-conference slate with a pair of road games, visiting Grace (Neb.) on Jan. 25 and Mount Marty on Jan. 28.

The Trojans swings back in the NSAA conference action to kick off the month of February.  DSU will play its final two conference games on the road at Waldorf on Feb. 3 and Viterbo on Feb. 4.

Dakota State plays its final four regular-season games at DSU Fieldhouse, hosting Dickinson State on Feb. 10, Valley City State on Feb. 11, Bellevue on Feb. 17 and Mayville State on Feb. 18.

The North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament kicks off with opening round games on Feb. 23, followed by semifinals games on Feb. 25.  The championship game is slated for Feb. 27 at the highest remaining seed.

The winner of the NSAA Men's Basketball Postseason Conference Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. on March 8-14.  Dakota State had qualified for the national tournament four times in the last five years.
