SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off their 2016 cross country season Friday evening at Yankton Trail Park, competing in the sixth annual Augustana (S.D.) Twilight.  The 'Under the Lights' meet featured record number of participants with 38 high schools, 29 college/universities and over 1,700 runners that include NCAA Division I schools from Nebraska and Kansas State.  

There were close to 300 total runners in each race – the women's 3-mile run and the men's 4-mile run.  The results were divided into three separate divisions – unattached runners (non-award runners), University (NCAA Division I) and College (NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and junior colleges combined).

There was a total of 228 runners in the College women's division.  The men's College Division also had 228 runners competing.

Karen Mayfield was the top Trojan runner in the women's College race, clocking a time of 19 minutes, 13.78 seconds for a 104th-place finish.  Tyra Laws added a 192nd place with a time of 21 minutes, 9.96 seconds.

Dakota State scored 493 points in the men's College division, which featured a total of 22 teams from NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and junior college levels.

Braden Curnow led DSU with a 74th-place finish with a time of 20 minutes, 44.87 seconds.  Alex Derr recorded a time of 21 minutes, 10.85 seconds to earn 104th place.

Mark Moeller ran a time of 21 minutes, 34.91 seconds to finish 130th in the race for the Trojans.  Claudio Tejada was 155th in 22:01.08, followed by Cameron Harming's 162nd place finish in 22:13.57 and Michael Carson's 165th place in 22:18.37.

Maxwell Cruse clocked a time of 22:39.45 to finish 182nd for DSU.  Jonathan Lein was 198th (23:18.70) and Caleb Hemphill placed 205th (23:40.66).

Dakota State continues their action next Saturday (Sept. 10) as they return home.  The Trojans will host its home meet – 14th Annual Herb Blakely Invitational – at the Madison Country Club (located west of Madison on highways 34 and 81). 

The women's 5K race will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with the men's race to follow at approximately 11:15 a.m.
