This Week
Dakota State (S.D.) continues their cross country action Saturday morning as they host their lone home meet of the season, the 14th Annual Herb Blakely Invitational.  The women's 5K race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at approximately 11:15 a.m. at the Madison Country Club, located in west Madison on highways 34 and 81.

About Herb Blakely Invitational
As of Wednesday afternoon, ten teams ranging from NCAA Division II through junior colleges and close to 90 runners in each field are expected to compete in the 14th Annual Herb Blakely Invitational.  Herb Blakely was a former long-time Trojan cross country/track & field head coach.  Teams expected to compete in the DSU's home meet on Saturday include Dakota State (S.D.), DSU Alumni, Briar Cliff (Iowa), Hastings (Neb.), Iowa Lakes Community College, Morningside (Iowa), Mount Marty (S.D.), Northwestern (Iowa), Trinity Bible (N.D.) and a pair of NCAA Division II schools Northern State (S.D.) and Wayne State (Neb.). 

2015 Herb Blakely Invitational Recap—Women's Race
Dordt (Iowa) won the women's team title with 26 points, ending Mount Marty (S.D.) three consecutive team titles from 2012 through 2014.  NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.) came in second with 41 points.  Dakotah Bullen of Northern State was the top runner with a time of 18 minutes, 28 seconds, the fifth best time in the history of Herb Blakely Invitational meet.  Karen Mayfield was the top DSU runner with a 27th-place finish with a time of 21 minutes, 6 seconds.  Tyra Laws also placed 68th with a time of 25:10 for the Trojans.  The last time Dakota State won the Herb Blakely Invitational team title was in 2009 when the Trojans edged Dordt (Iowa).

2015 Herb Blakely Invitational Recap—Men's Race
Northwestern (Iowa) won their third straight team title in last year's Herb Blakely Invitational by edging Dordt (Iowa) 43-48.  Sylvester Barus of Iowa Western won the individual title meet for the second straight year after clocking a time of 25 minutes, 29 seconds, the fourth fastest time in the meet history breaking his previous personal meet record of 25 minutes, 43 seconds.  Michael Carson is the top DSU returning runner that finished 72nd with a  time of 30 minutes, 42 seconds.  Dakota State won the team titles from 2009 through 2011 before Mount Marty (S.D.) took the team title in 2012.

Dakota State (S.D.) shines at Augustana (S.D.) Twilight Meet—Women's Race
Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off the 2016 cross country season on Sept. 2 in the sixth annual Augustana (S.D.) Twilight meet in Sioux Falls, S.D.  The 'Under the Lights' meet featured record number of participants with 38 high schools, 29 college/universities and over 1,700 runners all together that included NCAA Division I schools of Nebraska and Kansas State.  Karen Mayfield was the top Trojan runner in the women's college race with a time of 19 minutes, 13.78 seconds.  She finished 104th overall.  Tyra Laws added a 192nd place with a time of 21 minutes, 9 seconds.  A total of 228 runners competed in the women's 3-mile race.

Trojan Men's finished 18th as team at Augustana (S.D.) prime-time race
Dakota State (S.D.) earned 493 points in the men's College division, which featured a total of 22 teams from NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and junior college levels.  The Trojans finished 18th overall as a team.  Braden Curnow led Dakota State with a 74th-place finish in 20 minutes, 44 seconds.  Alex Derr followed up with a time of 21:10 to finish 104th.  Mark Moeller, returning back from a medical injury redshirt last season, posted a time of 21 minutes, 34.91 seconds for a 130th place finish.  Claudio Tejada was 155th in 22:01, followed by Cameron Harming's 162nd place in 22:13 and Michael Carson's 165th place in 22:18.  Maxwell Cruse finished in 22 minutes, 39 seconds for 182nd place finish.  Jonathan Lein was 198th (23:18) and Caleb Hemphill placed 205th (23:40).

A Look Ahead
Dakota State (S.D.) will take a week off before turning back to action after the Herb Blakely Invitational.  The Trojans travel to Falcon Heights, Minn. on Saturday, Sept. 24 as they compete in of the premier races in the Midwest region, the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by NCAA Division I University of Minnesota.
