This Week
The Dakota State University cross country teams return back to action Saturday morning as they compete in the Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational.  The race will be held at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve in McCook Lake, S.D. or located in North Sioux City, S.D. (272 Westshore Drive).  It is the first cross country meet in the month of October for the Trojans.

About Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational
The annual Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational will be held at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve located in McCook Lake, S.D. or near North Sioux City, S.D.  The women's 5K race is slated to start at 10 a.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at 10:45 a.m.  The course is made up mostly of crushed rocks, as well as flat and fast.  Numerous teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference and several teams from NCAA Division II (Augustana, Sioux Falls, Wayne State) are scheduled to compete in the cross country meet.  Last season, five Trojan runners posted season-best times at the Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational led by Karen Mayfield with a time of 20 minutes, 5.97 seconds and Claudio Tejada with a time of 28 minutes, 30.60 seconds.

Karen Mayfield of Dakota State (S.D.) ran in the 31st Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24 in St. Paul, Minn.  The meet was hosted by NCAA Division I University of Minnesota at Les Bolstad Golf Course, featuring primarily runners from NCAA Division II levels along with NAIA schools in the Maroon II division.  A total of 392 women's runners competed in the race, where Mayfield finished with a time of 27 minutes, 50 seconds for DSU.  She placed 273rd in the race.

DSU Men's Cross Country Team places 37th at Roy Griak Invitational
The Dakota State University men's cross country team finished 37th overall in the 31st Annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by NCAA Division I University of Minnesota on Sept. 24.  There were a total of 40 teams in the Maroon II men's 8K race, which was primarily mostly from NCAA Division II schools.  The Trojans finished as the third-best North Star Athletic Association team in the race behind Waldorf (Iowa) and Dickinson State (N.D.).  The Trojans collected a total of 1,054 points in the meet, placing higher than NCAA Division II Minot State (N.D.) and NAIA's Grand View (Iowa) and Graceland (Iowa).

A total of 453 runners completed the men's 8K race at the Les Bolstad Golf course in the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.  Braden Curnow led the Trojans with a 187th place finish with a time of 29 minute, 1 second, followed by Alex Derr with a 229th place finish with a time of 29 minutes, 19 seconds.  Mark Moeller posted a season-best time of 30 minutes, 20 seconds to earn a 303rd place finish for the Trojans.  Cameron Harming was 319th with a time of 30 minutes, 35 seconds.  Maxwell Cruse was 331st (30 minutes, 51 seconds), followed by Jonathan Lein 361st (31:33), Michael Carson 373rd (31 minutes, 53 seconds), Caleb Hemphill 376th (31 minutes, 57 seconds), Claudio Tejada 380th (32 minutes, 2 seconds) and Corey Hermann 396th (32 minutes, 34 seconds).

Regionally Speaking...
Dakota State (S.D.) men's cross country team remains third in the North Star Athletic Association conference rankings as of Sept. 26.  Waldorf (Iowa) holds the top spot in the men's division, followed by Dickinson State (N.D.) second.  Jamestown (N.D.) was placed fourth in the poll, while Viterbo (Wis.) was fifth and Valley City State (N.D.) sixth.  On the women's side, the Trojans are ranked fourth in the conference rankings.  Dickinson State is the top-ranked team in the conference, followed by Jamestown second and Viterbo third.  Waldorf is fifth while Valley City State is sixth in the conference rankings.  The next conference rankings will come out on Oct. 10.

Preparing for the North Star Athletic Association conference meet
Dakota State (S.D.) have two cross country meets during the month of October before preparing for the North Star Athletic Association conference meet in November.  The Trojans will run in the Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational on Saturday.  DSU is slated to swing back in action on Oct. 22 as they compete in the Mount Marty (S.D.) in Yankton, S.D.  The NSAA conference meet is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Dickinson, N.D., hosted by Dickinson State (N.D.).

A Look Ahead
Dakota State (S.D.) will take a week off before returning back to action on Saturday, Oct. 22.  The Trojans run in the Mount Marty (S.D.) Invitational to be held in Yankton, S.D.  The meet will be held at Human Services Center located on north side of Yankton by US Highway 81 and South Dakota Highway 50.
