NSAA PRESS RELEASE

MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) announced its Men's Basketball coaches' preseason poll on Monday.  Dakota State (S.D.) is the preseason favorite to win the 2016-17 league title, voted by the conference head coaches.

The Trojans garnered seven (7) first-place votes and tallied 79 points to atop the coaches' preseason poll.  DSU was tied with Valley City State (N.D.) and Bellevue (Neb.) for the regular-season title in 2015-16, giving Dakota State their second consecutive conference regular-season title first time in school history.

DSU also won the NSAA Men's Basketball Conference Tournament for the second straight season and qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.  The Trojans fell short to eventual national runner-up St. Francis (Ind.) 96-81 in the opening round in Point Lookout, Mo. last March.

Dakota State finished their 2015-16 season with a 19-14 overall record – including a school-record nine consecutive victories during the month of February.  The Trojans were 10-4 record during NSAA conference play last season.

Bellevue picked up the remaining first-place votes and earned 70 points to finish second in the preseason poll.  Jamestown (N.D.) was picked to finish third with 57 points.  Dickinson State (N.D.) edged Valley City State (N.D.) 48-47 to finish fourth in the poll.  Waldorf (Iowa) placed sixth with 38 points, followed by Viterbo (Wis.) seventh with 26 points, Presentation (S.D.) eighth with 24 points and Mayville State (N.D.) ninth with 17 points.

Points are awarded on a 9-1 basis and coaches could vote for their own team.  Each NSAA member will be playing a total of 16 conference games during the season, eight games at home and eight games on the road.  The Trojans begin their conference play on Dec. 2 on the road at Presentation.

The NSAA Men's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament gets underway on Feb. 23, with the championship game slated for Feb. 27.  The winner of the conference tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. on March 8-14, 2017.

Dakota State kicks off their 2016-17 season, under the guidance of eighth-year head coach Gary Garner, on Oct. 27 (Thursday) at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans host Northwestern (Iowa) in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m.
