NAIA PRESS RELEASE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dakota State (S.D.) is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 national poll, announced by the national office Tuesday afternoon.  DSU collected a total of 172 points in the Top 25 national poll, voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conference, Association of Independent Institutions and Unaffiliated Groups.

The Trojans tied for the highest ranking during Gary Garner's coaching era at DSU since March 20, 2013, where DSU was tied with Bellevue (Neb.) for No. 14 ranking in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Postseason Top 25 national poll.  That year, the Trojans advanced to the 'Elite Eight' round in the national tournament with a school-record 25 victories and earned its first national ranking in school history (http://www.dsuathletics.com/article/585.php).

Dakota State was 19-14 overall record and 10-4 record in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference play last season.  Holding a 10-13 record before entering the month of February 2016, the Trojans reeled off a school-record nine consecutive victories which included the North Star regular-season and tournament titles.

DSU's 10 conference victories last season was the most victories in conference action since 2004-05 season when the Trojans were 12-6 record in the former Dakota Athletic Conference.

It was the first time in Trojan men's basketball program history that they won back-to-back conference regular-season and conference postseason tournament last year.  DSU fell short to eventual NAIA Division II National Tournament runner-up Saint Francis (Ind.) in the opening round where the Trojans held their lead for the majority of the game before USF made a strong closing run for 96-81 victory.

Dakota State had qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament four times in the last five years.  The Trojans had appeared in the conference tournament's championship game five consecutive years, winning four times (all of those games were against Jamestown, N.D. including the last three years in the North Star conference tournament's postseason championship game).

Saint Francis holds the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 poll with ten (10) first-place votes and 311 points.

Dakota State kicks off their 2016-17 season Thursday evening as they host Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.

The first regular-season poll will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
