· The Dakota State University men's basketball team (0-0 overall record) kicks off their 2016-17 season with a pair of games from the Great Plains Athletic Conference at home.

· The Trojans host Northwestern (Iowa) (0-0) on Thursday evening.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. or approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Lady T's basketball game.

· On Tuesday, Nov. 1, DSU hosts another member of the GPAC—Dordt (Iowa) (0-0).  The game is slated for 7:30 p.m.


· Dakota State (S.D.) will provide a free live video and audio broadcast of the women's basketball game on Thursday versus Northwestern (Iowa) and next Tuesday versus Dordt (Iowa).  Jon Hunter, the Voice of the Trojans, will provide the audio broadcast of the women's basketball game.  To view the live webcast, go to

· Dakota State (S.D.) won their fourth conference tournament titles in the last five years, qualifying for the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

· The Trojans also won back-to-back conference regular-season titles for the first time in DSU men's basketball program history.

· DSU won the North Star Athletic Association conference regular-season and tournament titles for the last two years. The Trojans also won the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) in 2012 and 2013.

· All conference tournament championship game in the last five years were against Jamestown (N.D.).


· Mark Nov. 5-6 on your calendar as Dakota State (S.D.) will be one of the four South Dakota teams to compete in the NAIA/South Dakota Basketball Classic at The Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

· The first annual NAIA/South Dakota Basketball Classic is hosted by Mount Marty (S.D.).

· Two Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) members—Mount Marty and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.)—and two North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) members—Dakota State and Presentation (S.D.)—will compete in the classic.

· The Trojans will play Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on the first day of the classic on Nov. 5.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.  On the second day on Nov. 6, DSU plays Mount Marty with the game time starting at 8 p.m.

· Dakota State is scheduled to be the host next season for the NAIA/South Dakota Basketball Classic at The Pentagon.  Each member will take turn hosting the basketball classic each year.


· After a slow start with a 10-13 record before entering the month of February, DSU reeled off a school-record nine consecutive victories.

· The Trojans won back-to-back conference regular-season and tournament titles for the first time in DSU men's basketball program history.

· DSU fell short to eventual NAIA Division II national runner-up Saint Francis (Ind.) in the opening round, despite the Trojans held the lead for more than 35 minutes.  Dakota State finished the season with an overall record of 19-14 and 10-4 North Star conference record, the most conference victories since 2004-05 when the Trojans went 12-6 record in the former Dakota Athletic Conference.

· Trojan Kyle Kilgore was named to the North Star Most Valuable Player, First Team All-Conference and Newcomer of the Year.  He was also named to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball All-American Second Team.

· Tanner Heiser was honored as the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball All-Conference Second Team.


· Dakota State (S.D.) men's basketball team annually plays one of the toughest schedules in the nation and the 2016-17 is no exception as 14 of DSU's 30 regular-season games are teams that had been either ranked in the NAIA's Top 25/receiving votes or qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament last season.

· The Trojans will be playing a total of 16 North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference games this season.  DSU will play eight home games, including the last four straight regular-season games at DSU Fieldhouse.  Dakota State will also play eight NSAA road games.

· DSU, who is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Poll will host No. 21 Midland (Neb.) at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.  Both teams will play for the second meeting during Thanksgiving break as part of the two-day Draemel Classic in Fremont, Neb.

· Dakota State will play another game against NAIA's Top 25, at No. 4 Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Nov. 19 in Sioux City, Iowa.

· DSU is scheduled to play in the Mike Miller Classic in Mitchell, S.D. during Christmas break.

· The NSAA men's basketball conference season gets underway on Dec. 2 as the Trojans visit Presentation (S.D.).  The first four conference games will be on the road.

· DSU is slated to host Waldorf (Iowa) and Viterbo (Wis.) at DSU Fieldhosue for their first NSAA conference home games.

· The NSAA Men's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament is set for Feb. 23 with the championship game set for Feb. 27.

· Field Goal Percentage:  Kyle Kilgore—58.0 percent (213-of-367 field goals)

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Brendon Boomsma—39.7 percent (54-of-136)

· Free-throw percentage:  Brendon Boomsma—92.0 percent (69-of-75 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—277 rebounds (8.4 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—143 assists (4.6 assists per game)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—47 steals (1.5 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Kyle Kilgore—26 blocked shots (0.8  blocks per game)


· The Trojan Men's Basketball team have 12 players listed on this year's roster.

· Tanner Heiser and Kyle Kilgore are the two seniors on this year's roster.

· There are a total of 7 juniors this years.  They are Brendon Boomsma, Marquis Chatman, Nathaniel Rauen, Kevin Daniels, Ian Barse, Falcon Albers and Bobby Farquah.

· Justin Folkers is a sophomore for DSU.  Justin Prue and Link Tucker are freshmen.

· Gary Garner is entering his eighth season as head coach, assisted by Michael Larsen and Stephen Klekas.
