GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan men's basketball team (1-1 overall record) plays a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference teams in the South Dakota NAIA Basketball Classic this weekend at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

· The Trojans kick off the classic with an early battle of NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked teams, No. 25 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (1-0 overall record).  Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.

· On Sunday, Dakota State concludes the South Dakota NAIA Basketball Classic with a non-conference game versus in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) (2-0 overall record).  The game is scheduled for 8 p.m.

· DSU returned home on Wednesday as they host another NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team.  The Trojans welcome No. 21-ranked Midland (Neb.) in a non-conference game.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.

TROJANS WIN AT THE BUZZER IN OPENER

· No. 14-ranked Dakota State (S.D.) won a 90-89 buzzer-beater thriller over Great Plains Athletic Conference member Northwestern (Iowa) in the Trojans' season opener at DSU Fieldhouse on Oct. 27.

· When NWIA's Colton Kooima made a basket with 6.1 seconds remaining for Red Raiders' 89-88 lead, DSU's Tanner Heiser dribbled down the court and found Kyle Kilgore inside the paint basket at the buzzer for Trojans' victory.

· Since the arrival of DSU's head coach Gary Garner in 2009-10, Dakota State won their eighth straight home opener at DSU Fieldhouse.

· Heiser poured in a career-high 35 points—with 26 points coming in the first twenty minutes of the game.  He was 13-of-24 from the field, including 7-of-14 from the 3-point line.  His 7 3-pointers tied for sixth-most 3-pointers in a single game in the Trojan men's basketball school record book.

· Kilgore added 18 points (8-of-12 field goal shooting).  Kevin Daniels had 11 points.  Justin Folkers scored eight points off the bench.

· Nathaniel Rauen pulled down six rebounds for DSU.  Kilgore and Folkers each had four boards.

DSU FALLS TO DORDT (IOWA) AT HOME

· Dakota State (S.D.) ended the first-half with a strong outburst, rallying back from 11-point deficit to knot the game at halftime at 43-43.

· With DSU leading 72-68, DC closed the game by using a 20-4 spurt for an 88-76 non-conference victory over the Trojans.  The loss snapped DSU's eight-game home winning streak at DSU Fieldhouse.

· Kevin Daniels and Tanner Heiser each scored 18 points for the Trojans.  Justin Folkers added 12 points off the bench.

· Ian Barse earned seven rebounds for DSU.  Brendon Boomsma dished out four assists.  Heiser stole the ball four times.

· DC shot 55 percent overall from the field compared to the Trojans 47.1 percent.

· DSU outscored DC 8-0 in fast-break points and 42-22 inside the paint.

TROJANS IN THE RANKS

· According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Thursday, Dakota State (S.D) ranks fourth in the nation in assist/turnover ratio of 1.8.  The Trojans recorded 33 assists (16.5 assists per game) through the first two games while only committing 18 turnovers (9.0 turnovers per game).

· Tanner Heiser is ninth in the nation in 3-point field goal made per game with an average of 4.5.  He is also ninth in the nation in points per game with an average of 26.5 points.

· Kyle Kilgore converted 10-of-14 field goals through the first two game.  He is 17th in the nation in field goal percentage of 71.4 percent.

· As a team, the Trojans are 30th in the nation in field goal percentage (48.2 percent).  DSU is also 31st in the NAIA in assists per game (16.5), 32nd in steals per game (8.5), 34th in steals (17) and 34th in assists (33).

DSU VERSUS GPAC OPPONENTS

· Dakota State (S.D.) is in the middle of the five-game stretch against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

· The Trojans are 1-1 record versus the Great Plains Athletic Conference members this season.

· DSU will play an NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team or a team that received votes in the national poll five times this month.

· Dakota State will play No. 21 Midland (Neb.) twice this month, playing at the DSU Fieldhouse on Wednesday and on Nov. 27 as part of the Midland-Draemel Classic in Fremont, Neb.

· DSU will play DWU and Mount Marty twice this season as well.

· Points:  Tanner Heiser—53 points (26.5 points per game)

· Field Goal Percentage:  Kyle Kilgore—71.4 percent (10-of-14 field goals)

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Tanner Heiser—47.4 percent (9-of-19 3-point field goals)

· Free-throw percentage:  Kevin Daniels—66.7 percent (6-of-9 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Ian Barse—10 rebounds (5.0 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Brendon Boomsma/Tanner Heiser—7 assists (3.5 assists per game)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—5 steals (2.5 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Justin Folkers—1 block (0.5 blocked shots per game)

TROJANS' OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION

· Four Dakota State (S.D.) players are averaging double-digit points this season, led by Tanner Heiser with 26.5 points per game.

· Kevin Daniels is averaging 14.5 points per game, while Kyle Kilgore scoring 11.0 points per game for the Trojans.

· Justin Folkers averages 10.0 points per game off from the bench for DSU.
