GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· Dakota State (S.D.) (3-6 overall record, 0-0 NSAA) looks to swing back in the winning column as they kick off the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's Basketball conference season with a four-game stretch.

· The Trojans opens the conference season at Presentation (S.D.) (2-4 overall record, 0-0 NSAA) on Friday evening.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Strode Center (1500 N. Main St.) in Aberdeen, S.D.

· DSU continues their action on the road for another North Star contest on Sunday.  The Trojans travel to Jamestown (N.D.) (4-5 overall record, 0-0 NSAA) in rematch of last year's NSAA conference championship game.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Civic Center (212 3rd Ave. NE) in Jamestown, N.D.

· Both teams will be playing for the second North Star conference meeting in 2017 at DSU Fieldhouse, with the Trojans hosting the Jimmies on Jan. 20 and the Saints on Jan. 21.

DSU DROPS TWO IN DRAEMEL CLASSIC

· Dakota State (S.D.) could not get back in the winning column as they fell short against a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in the annual Midland (Neb.) Draemel Classic in Fremont, Neb.

· The Trojans could not hold on to their lead against Morningside (Iowa) on Nov. 26.  With DSU leading 66-65, the Mustangs closed the game with a 10-4 run in the final 1:51 to secure a 75-70 victory.

· The first twenty minutes of the game featured 11 lead changes and 3 ties by both teams.  The Trojans closed the first-half by scoring the final eight points to grab a 41-34 halftime lead.

· MC outscored DSU 41-29 in the second-half.

· Kyle Kilgore, who returned back for the first time since early November from an injury, posted a double-double of 22 points and collected 13 rebounds.  He was 11-of-14 from the field and dished out three assists.

· Tanner Heiser added 11 points, 3 assists and 3 steals for DSU.  Kevin Daniels had 9 points off the bench.  Ian Barse and Bobby Farquah each added six points.

· Morningside shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-of-56) compared to Dakota State 47.6 percent (30-of-63).

· MC was 15-of-21 free-throws while DSU only made both free-throw attempts.  The Trojans won the rebounding battle, posting a plus-15 margin over the Mustangs (36-21).

· Midland swept the season series with Dakota State with an 88-68 victory on Nov. 27. 

· Both teams went back-and-forth in the first-half with six ties and six lead changes.  MU led 42-37 at halftime before outscoring DSU 46-31 in the final twenty minutes of the game for the win.

· Kilgore had 18 points on his 7-of-8 field goal shooting and made all four free-throw attempts.  Justin Folkers added 12 points off the bench.  Heiser had 11 points and Daniels 10.

· Kilgore pulled down five rebounds.  Brendon Boomsma had four assists.

· The Warriors outrebounded the Trojans 31-26.

TWO TROJANS ON NSAA PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

· Two Dakota State (S.D.) players are listed on the 2016-17 NSAA Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team, announced by the conference office Tuesday.

· A total of fifteen (15) are listed on the NSAA Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team.  Tanner Heiser and Kyle Kilgore are the two of the six players on the preseason all-conference team and are listed on the 2015-16 NSAA Men's All-Conference. 

· Heiser leads the team with 16.8 points per game in nine games for the Trojans.  He also averages 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

· He was named to the first edition of the 2016-17 NSAA Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week on Nov. 7 after posting a double-double of 25 points (9-of-12 field goals, including 5-of-7 3-pointers) and dished out 10 assists in 98-78 victory over Mount Marty (S.D.) on Nov. 6.

· Heiser was named to 2015-16 NSAA Men's Basketball All-Conference Second Team for the Trojans.

· DSU's Kilgore was named to 2015-16 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball All-American Second Team.  He also was honored by the NSAA conference as its Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year and First-Team All-Conference honors last season.

· Kilgore averages 15.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game (5 games) this season for Dakota State.  He is 34-of-48 from the field (70.8 percent).  He scored in double digits four times this season.

· He led the Trojans with 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game during 2015-16.

TROJANS TEAM LEADERS

· Points:  Tanner Heiser—151 points (16.8 points per game)

· Field Goal Percentage:  Kyle Kilgore—70.8 percent (34-of-48 field goals)

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Marquis Chatman—44.8 percent (13-of-29 3-point field goals)

· Free-throw percentage:  Bobby Farquah—77.8 percent (7-of-9 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—32 rebounds (6.4 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—34 assists—(3.8 assists per game)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—15 steals—48th in the nation (1.7 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Bobby Farquah—6 blocks (0.7 blocked shots per game)

DSU IN THE RANKS

· According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Wednesday, Dakota State (S.D.) ranks fifth in the nation in assist/turnover ratio of 1.4.

· The Trojans also are 33rd in the nation in assists per game (16.1) and 43rd in 3-point field goal made with 78.

· Tanner Heiser ranks 30th in the nation with 26 3-pointers made.  He is also 48th in assist/turnover ratio of 2.8.
