VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) shot a sizzling 50 percent from the field Friday evening at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, holding Valley City State (N.D.) to their season-low points in 65-48 North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference victory.  The win also halted the Trojans' five-game losing skid.

Dakota State improved to 4-8 overall record and recorded its first NSAA conference win this season (1-2 NSAA conference record).  Valley City State fell to 9-5 overall record and suffered its first conference loss of the season (2-1 NSAA record).

The Vikings recorded its only lead of the game at 2-0 after a field goal by Jayden Ferguson with nineteen minutes and twenty-one seconds on the clock.

DSU answered back with a 7-0 run from three different scorers – Kevin Daniels, Brendon Boomsma and Kyle Kilgore – to grab a 7-2 lead with less than 18 minutes in the first-half.

Tied at 19-19, Dakota State went on a 10-3 scoring run to earn a 29-22 lead with 2:02 left before intermission.  VCSU closed the first-half with a 5-0 run to cut DSU's lead to 29-24.

Dakota State was 12-of-25 from the field (48 percent) in the first-half compared to Valley City State 35.7 percent (10-of-28).  The Trojans drained 5-of-13 from the 3-point line while the Vikings were just 1-of-7 3-pointers.

Tanner Heiser hit two consecutive 3-pointers to kick off the second-half, propelling the Trojans to their first double-digit lead of the game at 35-24 with 18:42 remaining.

The Vikings then scored four straight points before DSU maintained double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

Daniels hit a 3-pointer with 1:29 left for Trojans' biggest lead of the game at 65-43.

Dakota State outscored Valley City State 36-24 in the final twenty minutes of the game.  DSU shot a blazing 51.9 percent from the field (14-of-27) in the second-half while VCSU was held to 34.6 percent shooting (9-of-26).

Heiser led the Trojans with 19 points on his 7-of-12 field goal shooting.  He hit 5-of-10 3-pointersi n the game and contributed five assists and stole the ball twice.  Daniels added 15 points (6-of-13 field goals and 3-of-5 3-pointers).  Kilgore scored 11 points (4-of-8 field goals).  Justin Folkers was 5-of-6 from the field for 10 points.  Boomsma had six points.

Kilgore pulled down nine rebounds for Dakota State.  Folkers added seven rebounds.  Heiser earned six boards.

Austin Dunbar posted a double-double of 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Vikings.  Rashad Satahoo added 15 points.  Ellwood Ellenson scored 10 points.  Ferguson had six points.

Ferguson and Alex Quist each dished out three assists for VCSU.  Quist stole the ball three times.

Dakota State was 26-of-52 from the field, including 10-of-23 from the 3-point line.  Valley City State shot 35.2 percent from the field (19-of-54) and 5-of-16 from the 3-point arc.

VCSU was 5-of-9 free-throws (55.9 percent) while DSU was 3-of-6 from the free-throw line (50 percent).

The Trojans outrebounded the Vikings 34-27 in the game. 

Dakota State concludes their road stretch with another North Star contest on Wednesday evening.  The Trojans visit Dickinson State (N.D.) with a tip-off starting at 8:30 p.m. (Central Time)/7:30 p.m. (Mountain Time).  The game will be held at the Scott Gymnasium in Dickinson, N.D.

Valley City State stays home Saturday evening as they host Bellevue (Neb.) at 8 p.m.
