MADISON, S.D. – Viterbo (Wis.) held short-handed Dakota State (S.D.) to 34.4 percent field goal shooting Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, earning a 73-63 North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball conference victory.  The V-Hawks led almost the entire game, while the Trojans only held only lead briefly in the early second-half.

Dakota State fell to 5-10 overall record and 2-4 North Star conference record.  Viterbo snapped their five-game losing skid and improved their overall record to 7-7 and 2-3 NSAA record.

VU never trailed in the first twenty minutes of the game, holding the largest lead of the first-half on two different occasions (23-17 with 7:06 on the clock and 25-19 with 6:23 left in the first-half). 

Trailing 32-27, Tanner Heiser drained a 3-pointer as the Trojans cut V-Hawks' lead to 32-30 with 1:50 left in the first period.  Neither team was able to score for the rest of the first-half as Viterbo hang on to a slim two-point halftime lead.

The V-Hawks shot 52.2 percent from the field (12-of-23) in the first-half compared to the Trojans 37.9 percent from the field (11-of-29).

DSU opened up the second-half with a 5-2 scoring run for their only lead of the game at 35-34 after a 3-pointer by Brendon Boomsma with 18:31 remaining.  The Trojans' lead lasted for 1:05 before the V-Hawks regained their lead for the rest of the game.

Leading 36-35, Viterbo went on to score nine straight points to grab the first double-digit lead of the game at 45-35 with 13:16 left.  The Trojans could get no closer than seven points on three different occasions.

VU outscored DSU 41-33 in the second-half.

Four players scored in double figures for the Trojans, led by Heiser with 21 points.  Ian Barse added 13 points.  Kyle Kilgore had 11 points.  Justin Folkers scored 10 points.  Boomsma tallied eight points.

Kilgore and Link Tucker each grabbed seven rebounds for Dakota State.  Barse added six rebounds. Kilgore registered two blocked shots. 

Heiser produced five assists for DSU.  Kilgore, Boomsma and Nathaniel Rauen each had two assists.  Kilgore and Hesier each had a steal.

Ethan Haberman scored a game-high 23 points for the V-Hawks.  He was 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-5 from the 3-point line and went 3-of-5 free-throws.  Jason Tichy had 13 points off the bench.  Erik Engelstad and Austin Poehls each had nine points.  Jake Bamke tallied eight points.

Haberman earned eight rebounds for VU.  Zach Baker dished out four assists.  Jared Fleischmann had three assists.

Viterbo shot a blazing 51 percent overall from the field, making 25 baskets in 49 attempts.  Dakota State was 21-of-61 from the field.  VU drained eight 3-pointers in 16 attempts (50 percent).  DSU was 9-of-35 from the 3-point line (25.7 percent).

The V-Hawks were 15-of-26 free-throws (57.7 percent).  The Trojans made 12-of-15 free-throws (80 percent).

DSU outrebounded VU 37-35 in the game.  Viterbo outscored Dakota State 20-0 in bench points and 11-6 in points off turnovers.

Dakota State will take a week off before returning back to action after Christmas.  The Trojans play a pair of games in the Mike Miller Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  DSU plays Southeastern (Fla.) on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 12:30 p.m.  Dakota State is slated to play No. 15-ranked York (Neb.) on Friday, Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m.

Viterbo stays on the road Tuesday evening as they visit Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) in a non-conference game.
