GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· After taking a week off from Christmas break, the Dakota State University (S.D.)  Trojan men's basketball team (5-10 overall record) looks to bounce back in the winning column with three games scheduled in a span of five days.

· The Trojans play in the seventh annual Mike Miller Classic on Thursday-Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. (604 N. Main St.).  DSU plays Southeastern (Fla.) (9-5 overall record) of The Sun Conference to kick off the Doug Martin Classic on Thursday.  Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.

· On Friday evening, Dakota State plays No. 15-ranked York (Neb.) (10-4) on the second day of the Doug Martin Classic.  The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the Corn Palace.  For more information on the Mike Miller Classic, go to http://www.mikemillerclassic.com/schedule.php.

· DSU rings into the new year of 2017 on Monday as they host long-time rival No. 12-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (13-3) at DSU Fieldhouse.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Madison, S.D.

DSU PULLS AWAY PAST WU IN FIRST NORTH STAR HOME GAME

· Dakota State (S.D.) played its first home North Star conference game on Dec. 16 at DSU Fieldhouse.  With Waldorf (Iowa) leading 58-57, the Trojans closed the game with a 31-21 run to pull away for an 88-79 victory.

· It was DSU's fifth straight NSAA home victory, dating back from last year. 

· Both teams went through eight ties and eight lead changes in the first 15:36 of the game before the Trojans take a 42-37 halftime advantage.

· Three Trojans scored at least 20 points in the game, led by Kevin Daniels with 23 points.  Kyle Kilgore added his third double-double of the season with 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  Justin Folkers tied his career-high of 20 points.  Tanner Heiser had 14 points.

· WU shot 52.5 percent overall from the field (31-of-59) compared to DSU 51.8 percent (29-of-56).

· Dakota State went to the free-throw line 34 times, making a season-high 27 free-throws (21-of-24 in the second-half).  Waldorf was 13-of-18 free-throws.

TROJANS FALL SHORT TO V-HAWKS

· Viterbo (Wis.) held short-handed Dakota State (S.D.) to 34.4 percent field goal shooting on Dec. 17.  The V-Hawks defeated the Trojans 73-63 at DSU Fieldhouse.

· Four Trojans scored in double digits in the game, led by Tanner Heiser with 21 points.  Ian Barse added 13 points.  Kyle Kilgore tallied 11 points.  Justin Folkers scored 10 points.  Brendon Boomsma had eight points.

· Kilgore and Link Tucker each grabbed seven rebounds for DSU.  Heiser dished out five assists. 

· Viterbo shot 51 percent overall from the field (25-of-49), while Dakota State struggled from the field by making 21 baskets in 61 tries.

· DSU outrebounded VU 37-35 in the game.  VU outscored DSU 20-0 in bench points and 11-6 in points off turnovers.

DSU SEEKING FOR FIRST WIN OVER TOP 25

· Dakota State (S.D.) will be playing back-to-back games against teams that are ranked in the current NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll this week.

· On Friday, the Trojans play No. 15-ranked York (Neb.) of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference at the Corn Palace. 

· DSU is scheduled to play another Top 25-ranked tem on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017 as they host No. 12-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at DSU Fieldhouse.

· Dakota State is seeking for their first win over the NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team this season.  The Trojans are 0-4 record against Top 25 teams (lost to Dakota Wesleyan on Nov. 5; Midland, Neb. twice and Briar Cliff).

TROJANS' BALANCED SCORING ATTACK

· Dakota State (S.D.) have four players averaging in double figures this season, led by Kyle Kilgore with 16.8 points per game.

· Tanner Hesier follows up with 15.5 points per game for the Trojans.  Kevin Daniels averages 14.2 points per game and Justin Folkers with 10.0 points per game.

· Folkers leads the North Star in field goal percentage during conference game, registering a field goal percentage of 69.8 percent.

· The Trojans ranks 29th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio of 1.2.  DSU also is 39th in the NAIA in total assists with 218 assists.

· DSU's Heiser is 19th in the nation in 3-point field goals made with 45 and 24th in 3-point field goals per game (3.0).

· Dakota State is averaging 76.1 points per game through 15 games.  DSU averages 71.5 points per game in six North Star conference games.

TROJANS TEAM LEADERS

· Points:  Tanner Heiser—232 points (15.5 points per game)

· Field Goal Percentage:  Justin Folkers—60.0 percent (63-of-105 field goals)

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Tanner Heiser—39.9 percent (45-of-113 3-point field goals)

· Free-throw percentage:  Kevin Daniels—82.5 percent (33-of-40 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—88 rebounds (8.0 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—54 assists—(3.6 assists per game)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—26 steals (1.7 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Bobby Farquah—7 blocks (0.5 blocked shots per game)

LAST MEETING

· Dakota State (S.D.) will be playing their first-ever meeting with Southeastern (Fla.) in the Mike Miller Classic on Thursday.

· The Trojans won the last meeting with York (Neb.), a 79-69 victory in the Bellevue (Neb.) Classic on Nov. 25, 2011.

· Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) won the last seven meetings with the Trojans, including the most recent at the Pentagon on Nov. 5 by the score of 88-72.  The last time DSU defeated DWU was on Jan. 16, 2013 in Mitchell, S.D.
