MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) men's basketball team returned back to action after Christmas break Thursday afternoon, playing on the first day of the Mike Miller/Doug Martin Classic at the Corn Palace.  After being down by four points to open up the game versus Southeastern (Fla.), the Trojans took charge with an 11-0 run and held off the Fire by the score of 78-74.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 6-10.  Southeastern, a member of The Sun Conference, saw their six-game winning streak ended (which included a pair of Top 25 ranked teams – No. 14 Bethel, Ind. and No. 7 Taylor, Ind.) and fell to 9-6 overall record.

CJ Reese scored its first four points of the game to give Fire a 4-0 lead.  It was their only lead of the game in the first one minute and twenty-six seconds before the Trojans overtook the lead.

DSU then answered by scoring 11 straight points – thanks to eight points from Kyle Kilgore and a 3-pointer from Ian Barse.  The Trojans led 11-4 with 14:48 on the clock in the first-half.

Dakota State continued their scoring run, expanding to a double-digit lead at 23-13 after a lay-up by Brendon Boomsma with 8:47 left before intermission.

The Trojans maintained a 39-29 halftime advantage over the Fire.  DSU shot 45.5 percent from the field (15-of-33), including 5-of-12 from the 3-point line in the first-half.  SEU was 10-of-25 from the field (40 percent) and 4-of-7 3-pointers.

Southeastern was able to cut the deficit versus Dakota State within one possession five times in the second-half, including a layup by Reese to cut DSU's lead down to 76-74 with eight seconds to go.

Tanner Heiser was able to nail down a pair of free-throws to secure a four-point victory. 

SEU outscored DSU 45-39 in the final twenty minutes of the game.  The Fire shot 56.3 percent from the field (18-of-32) compared to the Trojans 50 percent (16-of-32) in the second-half.

Four Dakota State starters scored in double digits.  Kilgore poured in 23 points on his 9-of-16 field goal shooting.  Boomsma added 17 points (5-of-11 field goals, including hitting 4 3-pointers).  Barse and Justin Folkers (8-of-13 field goals) each added 16 points.

Tanner Heiser scored six points, dished out six assists and stole the ball twice for the Trojans.  Barse also had seven assists. 

Kilgore led DSU with eight rebounds and two blocked shots.  Folkers added six rebounds.  Barse had five rebounds.

Reese scored a game-high 25 points for SEU.  He was 10-of-17 from the field and 4-of-6 free-throws.  Wesley Johnson had 17 points (6-of-8 field goals).  Jeremy Oppenheimer tallied 10 points.

Josue Celestin grabbed 10 rebounds for the Fire.  Oppenhemier had six rebounds and three assists.  Reese also had three assists.

Southeastern shot better in the game, shooting 49.1 percent overall (28-of-57).  Dakota State had three more made baskets than the Fire, making 31 baskets in 65 attempts (47.7 percent).  The Trojans were 6-of-17 from the 3-point arc while the Fire was 4-of-11 3-pointers.

The Fire converted 14-of-18 free-throws.  The Trojans were 10-of-14 from the free-throw line.

SEU outrebounded DSU 31-26.   The Trojans outscored the Fire 17-14 in second-chance points and 10-6 in points off turnovers.

The victory also gave DSU's head coach Gary Garner his 499th career collegiate coaching win (126 victories at Dakota State).

Dakota State continues their action at the Mike Miller/Doug Martin Classic Friday evening.  The Trojans face No. 15-ranked York (Neb.) with a tip off starting at 5:30 p.m.  The game will be held at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.​
