THIS WEEK

· The Dakota State University men's basketball team (8-10 overall record, 2-4 North Star conference record) returns back to North Star Athletic Association action Friday evening.

· The Trojans look to extend their season-high winning streak Friday evening as they visit Mayville State (N.D.) (6-7 overall record, 0-4 NSAA conference record).

· Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D.

TROJANS CLAIM MIKE MILLER CLASSIC TROPHY

· Both Dakota State (S.D.) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) went 2-0 record in the Mike Miller Classic last week at the Corn Palace.

· The Trojans claimed the Mike Miller Classic over the Tigers, due to points differential.  DSU had a plus-12 point advantage, defeating Southeastern (Fla.) 78-74 and No. 15 York (Neb.) 82-74.  DWU finished with a plus-11 point differential (defeated York 92-90 and Southeastern 106-97).

· During the two-day Mike Miller Classic, Dakota State shot 53.0 percent from the field (61-of-115). 

· Four players averaged in double digits in the tournament, led by Kyle Kilgore with 21.0 points average.  Justin Folkers had 18.0 points average in the tournament, while Brendon Boomsma and Ian Barse each averaged 14.0 points per game in the two-day event.

DSU HANGS ON TO DEFEAT FIRE

· After trailing 4-0 to open the game against Southeastern (Fla.) of The Sun Conference, Dakota State (S.D.) stormed with an 11-0 run and held on to defeat the Fire by the score of 78-74 on the first day of the Mike Miller Classic at the Corn Palace on Dec. 29.

· DSU maintained a 10-point halftime lead at 39-29.  The Fire was able to cut the deficit within one possession five times in the second-half.  Tanner Heiser nailed down a pair of free-throws to secure the victory (78-74).

· Four Trojans scored in double digits, led by Kyle Kilgore with 23 points.  Brendon Boomsma added 17 points (4 3-pointers).  Ian Barse and Justin Folkers each added 16 points.

· Heiser dished out six assists and stole the ball twice for DSU.  Barse had five rebounds.

· SEU shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-of-57) compared to DSU 47.7 percent (31-of-65). 

GARNER EARNS 500TH WIN, BEAT YORK

· Gary Garner earned his 500th career collegiate coaching victory on the second day of the Mike Miller Classic, as Dakota State (S.D.) earned its first win over an NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team on Dec. 30.

· The Trojans shot a blazing season-high 60 percent from the field, fueling to an 82-74 upset victory over No. 15-ranked York (Neb.) of the Kansas Athletic Collegiate Conference.

· DSU held a 42-35 halftime lead over YC.  The Trojans had the biggest lead of the game at 52-37 with 15:10 remaining.

· With DSU's leading 74-71, The Trojans held the Panthers scoreless for almost two minutes.  During that span, the Trojans scored five straight points and secured the game.

· Justin Folkers tied the DSU school record for best field goal percentage in a single game, making all 10 field goals for 20 points.

· Kyle Kilgore added 19 points for the Trojans.  Ian Barse had 12 points.  Kevin Daniels and Brendon Boomsma each added 11 points.  Tanner Heiser had 10 points.

· Daniels had a game-high 11 assists in the game.

TROJANS EARN 2ND WIN OVER TOP 25, UPSET NO. 12 DWU

· Dakota State (S.D.) held a one-point halftime lead (34-33) over No. 12-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Jan. 2 at DSU Fieldhouse.

· The Trojans used a strong closing finish to post their second straight victory over an NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team by the score of 82-74.

· DSU also halted DWU's seven-game winning streak, as well as seven-game winning streak in the series meeting where the Trojans' last victory came on Jan. 16, 2013 in Mitchell).

· The Trojans had the largest lead of the game at 25-18 before the Tigers used a 12-2 spurt to grab a 30-27 lead late in the first-half.

· Battling back-and-forth in the second-half, Ian Barse hit a 3-pointer clutch shot to put the game away with less than a minute to go.  The Trojans led 73-67 with 52.8 seconds to go after a 3-pointer by Barse.

· DSU shut down DWU in the final 1:25 of the game where the Trojans scored the game's final six points.

· The Trojans outscored the Tigers 42-34 in the second-half.

· Five Dakota State players scored in double digits, led by Kyle Kilgore with 19 points.  Kevin Daniels added 16 points off the bench.  Barse made 5 3-pointers in the game for 15 points.

· Tanner Heiser tallied 12 points for the Trojans.  Kilgore led the Trojans with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

· DSU shot 47.5 percent overall rom the field, including 10-of-18 3-pointers.  DWU was 44.1 percent and 6-of-27 from the 3-point line.

TROJANS TEAM LEADERS

· Points:  Tanner Heiser—260 points (14.4 points per game)

· Field Goal Percentage:  Justin Folkers—62.5 percent (85-of-136 field goals)

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Tanner Heiser—38.2 percent (47-of-123 3-point field goals)

· Free-throw percentage:  Kevin Daniels—81.8 percent (36-of-44 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—112 rebounds (8.0 rebounds per game)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—72 assists—(4.0 assists per game)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—29 steals (1.6 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Kyle Kilgore—8 blocks (0.6 blocked shots per game)

FOLKERS NAMED NSAA PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

· The North Star selected DSU's Justin Folkers as its Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week on Jan. 2.

· Folkers averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds to fuel the Trojans to a 2-0 record in the Mike Miller Classic.  He tied his career-high 20 points (10-of-10 field goals) in 82-74 victory over No. 15-ranked York (Neb.).

· He had scored in double digits for ten consecutive games after Jan. 2 victory over DWU.
