MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) overcame Mayville State's (N.D.) 13-of-23 3-point field goals Friday evening at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, escaping for an 82-76 victory in the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball conference action.  The Trojans extended their season-high winning streak to four games.

Dakota State lifted their overall record to 9-10 and 3-4 record in the North Star conference standings.  Mayville State lost their seventh straight game, falling to 6-8 overall record and 0-5 NSAA record.

The Comets opened up the game with a 19-12 lead in the first seven minutes and five seconds of the game.

DSU's Tanner Heiser drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Bobby Farquah) to cap off a 16-8 scoring run to earn the first lead of the game at 28-27 with 8:02 left in the first-half.

Trailing 38-34, the Trojans shut down the Comets by scoring 10 consecutive points in the final 4:31 of the first-half to grab a 44-38 halftime advantage.  During that stretch, the Comets missed five field goals and committed four turnovers (two turnovers from offensive foul).

Both teams shot well above 50 percent in the first-half, with Mayville State shooting 56 percent from the field (14-of-25).  Dakota State was 54.3 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes, making 19 baskets in 35 attempts.

After MSU opened up the second-half with a field goal to cut DSU's lead to 44-40, the Trojans stormed with a 13-1 outburst to earn the biggest lead of the game.  Heiser hit a 3-pointer (assisted by Ian Barse) to give Dakota State a 57-41 lead with 15:09 remaining in the game.

Mayville State answered back with a 15-2 scoring run to cut DSU's lead to 59-56 after a 3-pointer by Conor Quinn with 10 minutes to go, forcing the Trojans to call a timeout.

With DSU leading 67-62, MSU went on an 8-2 lead to regain their lead at 70-69 with 4:15 left.  The Comets maintained their lead for almost three minutes, before the Trojans rallied back to tie at 74-74 with 1:50 left after Daniels hit the first free-throw of the double bonus free-throw situation. 

Kyle Kilgore knocked down a pair of free-throws to give DSU a 77-76 lead with 1:02 remaining.  After both teams committed a turnover on the next possession, MSU's Kiree Robinson was called for an offensive charge foul as Dakota State regained their possession with 18.6 seconds to go.

The Comets committed an intentional foul with less than 15 seconds remaining, giving the Trojans a pair of free-throws and the ball.  Kilgore made 1-of-2 free-throw to widen DSU's lead to 78-76.

Mayville State committed another foul as Kilgore added a pair of free-throws to give Dakota State an 80-76 lead with less than 13 seconds to go.

Comet Ben Maranan's shot was blocked by Trojan Kevin Daniels with less than five seconds to go and then MSU committed a foul.  Heiser made both free-throws to secure the victory for Dakota State.

Both teams scored 38 points in the second-half.  A total of 11 lead changes and 4 ties were recorded in the game.

Five Dakota State players scored in double figures in the game.  Kilgore registered a double-double of 17 points (9-of-10 free-throws) and pulled down 10 rebounds.  It was his fourth double-double this season.  Justin Folkers (8-of-15 field goals) and Daniels (6-of-9 field goals and 2-of-4 3-pointers) each added 17 points.  Heiser scored 12 points.  Farquah had 10 points.

Farquah collected seven rebounds for DSU.  Folkers added five rebounds.  Kilgore dished out three assists.  Brendon Boomsma, Barse and Heiser each had two assists.  Daniels stole the ball twice.

Maranan led the Comets with 15 points (4-of-7 field goals, 3-of-4 3-pointers and 4-of-4 free-throws).  Josh Foulds added 14 points (6-of-9 field goals).  Quinn made four 3-pointers for 12 points.

Foulds pulled down five rebounds for MSU.  Maranan and Foulds each produced three assists. 

Mayville State shot 52.9 percent overall from the field (27-of-51), including 13-of-23 3-pointers (56.5 percent).  Dakota State was 47.6 percent from the field (30-of-63) and 5-of-13 3-pointers (81 percent).

The Trojans converted 17-of-21 free-throws, with 15-of-17 free-throws coming in the second-half.  The Comets were 9-of-10 from the free-throw line (90 percent). 

DSU won the rebounding battle, outrebounding MSU 35-22.  The Trojans outscored the Comets 15-5 in second-chance points.

Dakota State remains on the road next Saturday (Jan. 14), concluding their first-half portion of the NSAA conference schedule.  The Trojans travel to Bellevue (Neb.) for a North Star conference game.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Gordon Lozier Center in Bellevue, Neb.
