MITCHELL, S.D. - The Trojan men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2010 season on Friday at the Wild Oak Country Club. DSU men's placed five runners in the top 10 to capture the title at the DWU Invitational. Samantha Drealan placed fifth at the meet for the Trojans' women.
The Trojan men's team, No. 15 in the NAIA Men's Cross Country Preseason Poll, scored 20 points. Dordt placed second with 35 points. Briar Cliff was third with 95 points and NCAA Division III Buena Vista finished fourth with 100 points. A total of 50 runners competed in the men's race.
Dakota State men's team placed three runners in the top three. Andy Coy won the individual title with a time of 21 minutes and 18.38 seconds. Devon Berkness came in second place with a time of 21:22.33. Matt Fideler was third in 21:32.25.
DSU's Eamin Entwisle placed fifth with a time of 21:58.81. Thomas Kjerengtroen was ninth in 22:28.48. Other DSU men's runners placed in the meet are: Michael Hoffman (12th - 23:00.83), Andrew Manning (19th - 23:53.06), John Bintliff (29th - 24:13.45), Kace Groff (30th - 24:14.96) and Keith Huffman (36th - 24:54.19).
On the women's side, the Trojans had three runners in the race. Dordt won the title with 15 points followed by Briar Cliff with 52 points. Dakota Wesleyan was third with 77 points. NCAA Division III Buena Vista placed fourth with 112 points. A total of 38 women's runners competed in the meet.
Drealan finished fifth in the race with a time of 16 minutes and 43.06 seconds for the Trojans. Sara Schultz was 35th in 21:45.16. Nicole Jurrens placed 36th with a time of 21:52.90.
Dakota State will have a week off before returning back to action on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Trojans will host a home meet, the DSU/Herb Blakely Invitational, at the Madison Country Club. The women's race will start at approximately 10:30 a.m. with the men's race to follow.
