La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Viterbo (Wis.) battled in a key North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's Basketball conference game at R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium Saturday evening, where a total of seven ties and nine lead changes were recorded.  The game also saw series of runs by both teams, where the V-Hawks closed the game with a 6-1 run for a 66-61 victory.

Dakota State fell to 13-13 overall record and 6-6 NSAA conference record.  Viterbo completed their season series sweep over the Trojans, raising their overall record to 15-11 and 7-6 NSAA record.  The V-Hawks hold a half-game lead over DSU for fourth-place in the conference standings.  Dakota State fell in a two-way tie for fifth-place over Valley City State (N.D.).

The Trojans opened up the game with a 10-3 lead with sixteen minutes and fifty-three seconds on the clock.  DSU used three different scorers – Justin Folkers, Tanner Heiser and Kyle Kilgore – to open up a seven-point early lead.

Trailing 19-13, the V-Hawks sparked an 8-0 run to regain a 21-19 lead with 6:27 left before intermission.  Viterbo stretched its lead to 27-22 after a pair of free-throws by Jared Fleischmann with 1:18 on the clock.

After Erik Engelstad to put VU up 29-24, Heiser drained a 3-pointer with before the halftime buzzer sound.  The Trojans trailed 29-27 at halftime.

DSU was 12-of-30 from the field (40 percent) in the first twenty minutes of the game compared to VU 12-of-23 field goals (52.2 percent).

Kilgore made a basket with 14:30 left in the game as the Trojans tied the game at 39-39.  Viterbo then made an 8-0 outburst to grab a 47-39 lead with 11:26 remaining.

Dakota State would answer back with an 8-0 run, thanks to two consecutive 3-pointers by Kevin Daniels to tie the game at 47-47 with 10:03 left.

Both teams either tied or traded leads for a span of eight-plus minutes, with lead no more than three points held by both teams.

VU's Engelstad completed a 3-point play to knot the game for the seventh time at 60-60 with 2:13 remaining.  Ethan Haberman made a field goal as the V-Hawks regained a 62-60 lead with 1:24 left.

Ian Barse made one free-throw in two attempts as DSU cut VU's lead to 62-61 with less than 23 seconds to go in the game.  As the Trojans committed a foul, Haberman made both free-throws to give the V-Hawks a 64-61 lead with 18 seconds to go.

The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring chance on the next possession and was rebounded by Haberman.  DSU fouled Haberman as he secured the game by making both free-throws for a five-point victory for the V-Hawks.

VU outscored DSU 37-34 in the second-half.

Heiser led Dakota State with 19 points on his 7-of-13 field goal shooting.  He was 4-of-7 from the 3-point line and made a free-throw.  Kilgore added 12 points.  He was 6-of-10 field goals.  Barse scored nine points.  Folkers tallied eight oints.

Kilgore pulled down eight rebounds for the Trojans.  Brendon Boomsma added six rebounds.

Heiser dished out five assists for DSU.  He also had two steals in the game.  Kilgore recorded a blocked shot and three assists.

Haberman led the V-Hawks with 19 points (6-of-13 field goals and 4-of-4 free-throws).  Engelstad added 15 points (6-of-9 field goals).  Fleischmannn had nine points and produced seven assists.  Cade Anderson scored nine points off the bench.  Jake Bamke had eight points.

Viterbo shot 46.2 percent overall from the field, converting 24-of-52 field goals.  Dakota State was 44.6 percent from the field (25-of-56).  The Trojans were 9-of-24 3-pointers (37.5 percent) compared to the V-Hawks 6-of-16 from the 3-point line (37.5 percent).

VU was 12-of-15 free-throws (85.7 percent).  DSU was 2-of-5 free-throws (40 percent).

Both teams registered 31 rebounds in the game.

Dakota State returns home as they kick off their four-game home stand Friday evening.  The Trojans host one of the top teams in the North Star conference, Dickinson State (N.D.).  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
