MADISON, S.D. – Trailing 72-71 Friday evening in the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball conference action at DSU Fieldhouse, Tanner Heiser delivered a game-winning clutch shot with just :00.6 seconds remaining to give Dakota State (S.D.) a 73-72 victory over Dickinson State (N.D.).  There were a total of 12 lead changes and 4 ties in the game.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 14-13 and 7-6 record in the NSAA conference games.  Dickinson State, receiving votes to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, fell to 19-9 overall record and 10-4 NSAA record.

The Blue Hawks entered the game by holding a half-game lead in the NSAA conference standings, but fell by a half-game to No. 21-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) who defeated Valley City State (N.D.) 82-61 Friday evening.  The Trojans are currently in a sole possession for fifth-place, trailing Viterbo (Wis.) by a half-game in the standings for fourth-place.

Both teams traded leads or tied the games in the first five-plus minutes of the game.  Tied at 10-10, the Trojans hit three consecutive 3-pointers (2 from Ian Barse and 1 from Brendon Boomsma) to complete a 9-0 scoring outburst to grab a 19-10 lead with 13:44 on the clock.

The Blue Hawks rallied back with a 13-3 scoring run to regain their lead at 23-22 after a basket by Marcus White with 9:02 remaining before halftime.

DiSU held a 32-28 lead, but DaSU went to close the first-half with an 11-6 run to earn back their lead.  The Trojans were able to convert their scoring opportunity after the Blue Hawks committed a turnover with less than five seconds to go, while Nathaniel Rauen hit a lay-up just before first-half expired.

Dakota State led 39-38 at halftime.  The Trojans hot 15-of-28 from the field (53.6 percent) while the Blue Hawks were 14-of-28 field goals (50 percent).

Holding on to a 45-42 lead in the early second-half, DaSU went on to score six straight points to regain their biggest lead of the game at 51-42 with 15:19 remaining.  Boomsma made a pair of free-throws, followed by a pair of baskets by Bobby Farquah during the Trojans' scoring run.

Dakota State maintained their lead between five- and nine-point for a span of eight-plus minutes.  With DaSU leading 65-58, the Blue Hawks outscored the Trojans 14-3 to overtake a 72-68 lead with 1:43 left in the game.

Heiser drained a 3-pointer with 36.1 seconds remaining as Dakota State cut Dickinson State's lead to 72-71. 

DaSU fouled DiSU's Jerry Shevlin with less than 25 seconds to go.  Shevlin missed the front side of the bonus free-throw and was rebounded by Heiser.

The Trojans committed a turnover with 11.2 seconds remaining.  White was fouled by Kyle Kilgore with 10.6 seconds.  White missed the front side of the bonus free-throw and went out-of-bound with the ball possession to Dakota State.

Heiser drove the ball to the front court and made a clutch jump shot with :00.6 seconds left, giving the Trojans a 72-71 lead.

After three timeouts were called on the next possession (2 by DiSU and 1 by DaSU), the Blue Hawks were unable to get the final shot as Dakota State secured a thrilling victory.

Both teams scored 34 points in the second-half, despite Dakota State's 36.7 percent field goal shooting (11-of-30).  The Blue Hawks were 50 percent from the field (14-of-28 field goals) in the final twenty minutes, but the Trojans were 4-of-11 from the 3-point line while DiSU went 0-of-5 3-pointers.

Heiser finished the game with 16 points for the Trojans.  Boomsma added 15 points.  Barse scored 12 points on his four 3-pointers.  Kilgore tallied 11 points.

Kilgore led Dakota State with eight rebounds.  Hesier added five rebound.  Barse and Farquah each had four rebounds.

Heiser dished out a game-high seven assists for DaSU.  He stole the ball three times.  Kilgore and Barse each had two steals.

White poured in a game-high 26 points on his 10-of-16 field goal shooting and 5-of-6 free-throws for the Blue Hawks.  He stole the ball four times.  Gilbert Shojgreen, Jr. added 10 points and registered four blocks off the bench.  Donate Clark had nine points.

White grabbed nine rebounds for DiSU.  Reggie Fields, Jr. had seven rebounds. 

Jake Buck, Clark, Fields, Jr., White and Terrell Butler each produced two assists for Dickinson State.

Dickinson State shot 50 percent overall from the field (28-of-56) compared to Dakota State 44.8 percent (26-of-58).  The Trojans were 9-of-21 from the 3-point arc (42.9 percent), while the Blue Hawks were 4-of-12 3-pointers. 

DaSU was 12-of-16 free-throws (75 percent) while DiSU made 12-of-19 free-throws (63.2 percent). 

The Blue Hawks had a slim rebounding edge, outrebounding the Trojans 34-33.

Dakota State remains home Saturday evening, hosting Valley City State in a key North Star conference game.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojan men's basketball team will have their Parents' Night at approximately 10 minutes on the warm-up clock.

Dickinson State won't return back to action until next Friday as they return home at Scott Gymnasium.  The Blue Hawks host Jamestown (N.D.) in a crucial North Star conference action.  The game is slated for 8:30 p.m. (Central Time)/7:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) in Dickinson, N.D.
