MADISON, S.D. – Valley City State (N.D.) shot a sizzling 56.9 percent from the field Saturday, defeating Dakota State (S.D.) 90-75 in a key crucial North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's basketball action at DSU Fieldhouse.  Both teams split their season series meeting by winning the game on the road (DSU defeated VCSU 65-48 on Dec. 9, 2016 in Valley City).

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 14-14.  Valley City State improved to 15-14 overall record.  Both teams are tied for fifth in the NSAA conference standings with a 7-7 record, one-and-one-half game behind fourth-place from Viterbo (Wis.) with a 9-6 NSAA record.

The first-half featured a series of runs by both teams with nine lead changes and two ties.

Down 7-6, Brendon Boomsma nailed down a pair of 3-pointers to give the Trojans a 12-7 lead with less than 16 minutes on the clock.  VCSU answered back a pair of 3-pointers from Jason Ralph and Jayden Ferguson to regain their lead at 13-12 with 15:01 remaining in the first-half.

After a basket by Kyle Kilgore to give DSU a 23-20 lead, the Vikings used a 9-0 outburst to take a 29-23 lead with less than 10 minutes to go before intermission.

DSU responded back with a 12-1 scoring run to take a 35-30 lead with 6:03 on the clock in the first-half.

With DSU leading 45-40, the Vikings closed the first-half with a 7-0 run in the final 1:47 to take a 47-45 lead.  VCSU shot 57.1 percent from the field (16-of-28) in the first twenty minutes, including 7-of-13 from the 3-point arc.  The Trojans were 51.5 percent (17-of-33) and 6-of-12 from the 3-point line.

Dakota State trimmed Valley City State's lead down by one point at 53-52 after a 3-point play by Bobby Farquah with 15:02 remaining.

From there, Valley City State made four straight baskets from four different scorers (3-pointer by Rashad Satahoo, field goal by Ferguson, 3-pointer by Ralph and a basket by Austin Dunbar) to grab the first double-digit lead of the game at 63-52 with 12:48 on the clock. 

Dakota State could not get no closer than nine points at 63-54 with 11:37 left as the Vikings maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the second-half.

VCSU outscored DSU 43-30 in the final twenty minutes of the game.  The Vikings were 17-of-30 from the field (56.7 percent) while the Trojans were held to 35.5 percent field goal shooting (11-of-31). 

Four players scored in double digits for DSU, led by Boomsma with 17 points.  He was 6-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from the 3-point line.  Kilgore posted a double-double of 16 points (8-of-13 field goals) and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Tanner Heiser had 14 points.  Justin Folkers scored 12 points (4-of-5 field goals and 4-of-4 free-throws).  Farquah had nine points off the bench.

Ian Barse and Farquah each collected five rebounds for Dakota State.  Heiser dished out six assists.  Barse produced five assists.  Kilgore stole the ball twice.

Three VCSU scored at least 20 points in the game, led by Ralph with 23 points after going perfect 7-of-7 from the 3-point line and 2-of-2 free-throws.  Ferguson and Satahoo each scored 20 points.  Austin Dunbar recorded a double-double of 16 points and earned 14 rebounds.

Ralph registered a game-high nine assists for the Vikings.  Satahoo added four assists.  Ferguson and Ellwood Ellenson each recorded a block.

Valley City State had five more baskets by Dakota State.  The Vikings were 33-of-58 from the field compared to the Trojans 28-of-64 (43.8 percent).  VCSU drained 12 3-pointers in 22 attempts (54.5 percent), while DSU was 7-of-19 3-pointers (36.8 percent).

Both teams made 12 free-throws in the game.

The Vikings won the rebounding battle, outrebounding the Trojans 38-29. 

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the wining column as they wrap up their regular-season at home next weekend.  The Trojans continue their four-game home stand Friday evening, hosting No. 21-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) in the 'Black-Out' night to raise cancer awareness.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.

Valley City State returns home to conclude their regular-season.  The Vikings host Presentation (S.D.) Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.  The game will be held at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in Valley City, N.D.
