GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· The Dakota State University (S.D.) men's basketball team (15-15 overall record) kicks off their postseason play in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's Basketball Conference Tournament Thursday evening. 

· The Trojans visit the R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium for a quarterfinal action versus Viterbo (Wis.) (18-11 overall record).

· Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.

· Dakota State is the No. 5 seed in the conference postseason tournament, while Viterbo is the No. 4 seed.

· Thursday's quarterfinal winners will move on to the semifinals round of the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Postseason Conference Tournament.  The semifinals round is scheduled for Saturday at two higher remaining seeds.

TROJANS' SUCCESS IN NSAA POSTSEASON

· Dakota State (S.D.) is currently on a six-game winning streak in North Star Athletic Association Postseason Tournament.

· The Trojans had won back-to-back NSAA Men's Basketball Postseason Tournament Championship.  DSU defeated Jamestown (N.D.) in the last five years in the conference championship game—winning four times in the last five years.

TROJANS UPSET NO. 21 BU, FALL TO MSU

· Dakota State (S.D.) held their lead throughout the game before then-No. 21-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) made a furious comeback late in the second-half to force overtime on Feb. 17 at DSU Fieldhouse.

· BU rallied back to knot the game at 72-72 with less than 10 seconds to go in regulations.  The Trojans could convert their final possession of the game, extending the game into overtime.

· Kevin Daniels scored the first four points in overtime to give DSU a 76-72 lead, but the Bruins answered back with a 5-0 run for 77-76 lead.

· Dakota State then shut down Bellevue in the final 1:51 of the game by using an 8-0 run—with seven points coming from Kyle Kilgore.  DSU was 5-of-7 from the field and outscored the Bruins 12-5 in overtime.

· Kilgore finished the game with a double-double of 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Trojans.  He was 12-of-17 from the field.  Tanner Heiser added 20 points (5-of-10 3-pointers). 

· Justin Folkers had eight rebounds for DSU.  Heiser produced six assists.

· DSU shot a sizzling 52.5 percent from the field (31-of-59) compared to BU 38.2 percent (26-of-68). 

· Mayville State (N.D.) led wire to wire on Feb. 18, handing Dakota State a 62-50 defeat in the regular-season finale at DSU Fieldhouse.

· MSU led 30-26 at halftime and outscored the Trojans 32-24 in the second-half to secure the victory.

· Kilgore posted a game-high 18 points for DSU.  He was 6-of-11 from the field and converted 6-of-9 free-throws.  Brendon Boomsma and Ian Barse each added eight points.

· Folkers led Dakota State with eight rebounds.  Barse tallied seven rebounds.  Heiser dished out four assists and stole the ball twice.

· The Comets were 45.2 percent from the field (28-of-62) compared to the Trojans 38.3 percent (18-of-47).  Both teams made six 3-pointers in the game.

NSAA TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW

· For the second straight year, the North Star Athletic Association conference have three teams sharing the regular-season conference title (Bellevue, Dickinson State and Jamestown—all with 11-5 conference record).

· The Bruins will be the No. 1 seed when the quarterfinals kick off on Thursday.  BU owns the tiebreaker with a 3-1 record versus DiSU and UJ.

· The Blue Hawks are the No. 2 seed (2-2 record versus BU and UJ), while the Jimmies are the No. 3 seed (1-3 record versus BU and DiSU).

· Viterbo (Wis.) is the No. 4 seed in the postseason tournament with a 10-6 NSAA record.

· Dakota State (S.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) both finished the NSAA conference season with an 8-8 record.  The Trojans own the tiebreaker over the Vikings, breaking the tie with DaSU earning a victory over BU during the regular-season.

· Waldorf (Iowa) will be the No. 7 seed (7-9 NSAA record), followed by No. 8 Presentation (S.D.) (4-12 NSAA).  Mayville State (N.D.) did not make to the postseason tournament.

· The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 at the highest two remaining seeds.  The NSAA Championship game is set for Monday at the highest remaining seed.

· The North Star Postseason Tournament Champion earns an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament on March 8-14 at Keeter Gymnasium in Point Lookout, Mo.

· Dakota State had won the last two NSAA Postseason Conference Tournament, appearing in the championship game since North Star was formed in 2013-14.

· Points:  Kyle Kilgore—471 points (18.1 points per game)

· Field Goal PercentageJustin Folkers—59.7 percent (138-of-231 field goals)

· 3-point Field Goal Percentage:  Tanner Heiser—40.0 percent (82-of-205 3-point field goals—28th in the nation in 3-pionters made)

· Free-throw percentage:  Kevin Daniels—79.7 percent (51-of-64 free-throws)

· Rebounds:  Kyle Kilgore—216 rebounds (8.3 rebounds per game—37th in the nation)

· Assists:  Tanner Heiser—134 assists—25th in the nation (4.5 assists per game)

· Steals:  Tanner Heiser—54 steals—19th in the nation (1.8 steals per game)

· Blocked shots:  Bobby Farquah—16 blocks (0.6 blocked shots per game)

DSU RECORDS WATCH

· Kyle Kilgore is six points away to join the 1000-point club at Dakota State (S.D.).  He scored a total of 523 points during his junior season and 471 points this season.

· Kilgore joined in the Trojans' Top 10 in career rebounds.  He pulled down a total of 493 career rebounds at DSU.

· Tanner Heiser is fifth in the DSU record book for most career assists with 277 assists.  He is also tied for fifth in the record book for career steals with 101 steals (Derek Powell).
