TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota State University Trojan Baseball team made their 2017 season debut Monday in a doubleheader versus Grand View (Iowa) at Kino Sports Complex, as part of the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games.  The Trojans fell short in the first game by the score of 4-2 and were shut out by the Vikings in the second game 9-0.

Dakota State is 0-2 overall record.  Grand View improved their overall record to 8-5.

The Trojans take a day off before returning back to action on Wednesday.  DSU will play a single-game versus Northwestern (Iowa) on Field #4 at Kino Sports Complex.  First pitch is set for 5 p.m. (Central Time)/4 p.m. (Mountain Time).

Game 1 – Grand View (Iowa) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

After a scoreless first inning, the Vikings scored its first runs of the game in the top second inning.  GVU scored the first run caused by DSU's defensive error for a 1-0 lead.  Jack Haller added an RBI double to extend the Vikings' lead to 2-0.

Grand View added a run in the top third frame to widen their lead to 3-0, highlighted by Dustin Nelson's double.

Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom sixth inning.  Smith Kemper led off the Trojans with a walk.  Dyshawn Proudlove hit a single and advanced Kemper to second base.  Both Kemper and Proudlove advanced one base after GVU's passed ball.

Connor Nagel reached on base caused by Vikings' defensive error in the bottom sixth inning, allowing Kemper and Proudlove to score.  DSU trailed 3-2 before entering the final inning.

The Vikings added a run in the top seventh frame.  Ryan Curtis hit a double and advanced to third after Nelson's fly-out to left field.  Josh Luna recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Curtis to make it 4-2 in favor of GVU.

Grand View secured the game after recording the final three outs of the game.

Kemper was 2-of-2 at the plate with a triple and a single for Dakota State.  He also had a walk.  Proudlove added a single.  Nagel recorded an RBI.  Andrew Hesse reached on base by a walk.  Hesse and Garrett Mullins each swiped one base.

Haller and Curtis each had two hits for Grand View.  Damon Nuss, Nelson, Luna and Jake Miller each added a hit.  Luna and Haller each produced an RBI.

GVU outhit DSU 8-3 in the game.  The Vikings left eight runners on base while the Trojans left four runners on base.  Both teams had a double play, defensively. 

David Kirby (L, 0-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU.  He tossed five innings and allowed three unearned runs on six hits.  Hayden Rainey worked for two innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits.

Cody Mathews (W, 2-0) earned the pitching victory for GVU.  He pitched six innings and gave up two runs (one unearned) on three hits.  He struck out six Trojans' batters.  Austin Marchant (S, 2) pitched a shutout seventh inning to collect his second save of the season.

Game 2 – Grand View (Iowa) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

Grand View held Dakota State to three hits in the second game of the doubleheader, earning a sweep with a 9-0 victory.

The Vikings scored once in the opening inning and added three runs for a 4-0 lead after the second inning.  GVU plated twice in the bottom fourth and extended their lead to 9-0 after scoring three times in the sixth inning.

Jalen Boyd, Proudlove and Trey Randel each recorded a single for the Trojans.  Boyd and Nagel each had a walk.

Nelson was 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles and drove in two RBIs for the Vikings.  Curtis added two hits and three RBIs.  Smith had two singles and two RBIs.  Haller and Ben Jensen each recorded two hits.

Grand View outhit Dakota State 14-3 in the game.  GVU left eight runners on base, while DSU had two runners left on base.  Both teams' defense recorded a double play in the game.

Garrison Collier (L, 0-1) recorded the loss after working for 4 1/3 innings on the mound for the Trojans.  He gave up six runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.  Justin Mettling pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing three runs on four hits.

Parker Thode (W, 1-1) pitched a complete game victory for the Vikings.  He limited Dakota State to three times and struck out 13 batters.
