TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) poured in ten runs in the first two innings Wednesday afternoon in a nine-inning baseball non-conference game versus Northwestern (Iowa) as part of the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational at Kino Sports Complex.  The Trojans could not overcome a pair of Red Raiders' offensive explosion innings, falling in a slugfest by the score of 26-16 in seven innings.

Dakota State is 0-3 overall record.  Northwestern is 6-4 overall record.

The Trojans took the first lead of the game in the top first inning with two runs scored.  Zach Sutera reached on first base by a fielder's choice.  Dyshawn Proudlove hit a double to advance Sutera to third base.  Garrett Mullins produced an RBI single to score Sutera to give DSU a 1-0 lead (Proudlove advanced to third base on the same play).

Connor Nagel followed that up with a walk to advance Mullins to second base, setting up a bases loaded situation with two outs.  Garrison Collier recorded an RBI base-on-balls to score Proudlove to make it 2-0 in favor of the Trojans.

Dakota State exploded for eight runs in the top second frame.  Trey Randel led off the inning with a walk for the Trojans.  Jalen Boyd hit a single and advanced Randel to second base.  Sutera followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded and no out situation for DSU.

Smith Kemper produced an RBI single to score Randel as the Trojans extended their lead to 3-0 in the top second inning.  DSU made it 4-0 after Mullins recorded an RBI walk to score Boyd.  Nagel hit a 2-RBI single to score Sutera and Kemper as the Trojans' lead ballooned to 6-0.

After a pitching change by NWIA in the top second, the Trojans made it 7-0 after Collier's RBI single to score Mullins.  Nagel scored caused by Red Raiders' passed ball to put DSU up at 8-0.  Randel hit an RBI single to score Collier to make it 9-0 DSU.  Boyd hit a double to advance Randel to third base.  Sutera recorded an RBI single to score Randel as the Trojans' lead grew in double-digits at 10-0.

Northwestern answered back by scoring 12 runs in the bottom half of the second inning, earning a 12-10 lead over the Trojans.  The Red Raiders produced seven hits in the inning, while the Trojans committed four defensive errors.

DSU cut their deficit to 12-11 in the top third inning, thanks to Nagel's triple with two outs.  Collier hit an RBI single to score Nagel.

NWIA scored 13 runs in the bottom fourth inning to extend their lead to 25-11.  Northwestern produced 10 hits in the inning.

Dakota State scored twice in the top fifth inning.  Proudlove led off with a triple.  Mullins reached on base by a walk.  Nagel earned an RBI ground out to score Proudlove as DSU trailed 25-12.

Andrew Hesse registered a walk with two outs for the Trojans in the top fifth.  David Kirby hit a single to advance Hesse to third base.  The Trojans added another run from Randel's RBI single to score Hesse, trimming NWIA's lead to 25-13.

The Trojans plated three runs in the top sixth inning.  Boyd led off with a single and advanced to second base by NWIA's passed ball.  Justin Mettling reached on base by a walk.  Kemper hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Proudlove recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Boyd as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 25-14 in the sixth inning.  Nagel added a 2-RBI single to score Mettling and Kemper as the Trojans trailed 25-16.

NWIA reached on base by three consecutive walks from Dustin Gaither, Casey Guthmiller and Ryan Penny in the bottom seventh inning.  The Red Raiders secured the game after Mark Primrose recorded an RBI single to score Gaither.

A combined 42 runs, 39 hits and 6 defensive errors were recorded in the game.  DSU outhit NWIA 20-19.

The Trojans posted a season-high .513 batting average in the game compared to the Red Raiders' .452 batting average.

Boyd was 4-of-6 at the plate with two doubles, two singles and scored twice for Dakota State.  Nagel added a triple, two singles and drove in four runs.  Collier was 2-of-2 at the plate with two singles and collected three RBIs.  Sutera, Kemper and Proudlove each had two hits and an RBI.  Randel had two singles and two RBIs. 

Michael Callahan was 3-of-5 at the plate with three hits and earned six RBIs for Northwestern.  Christian Stekl added four hits and five RBIs.  Gaither had two hits and three RBIs.  Austin Zylstra recorded two hits and three RBIs.

Both teams used five different pitchers in the game.  Boyd (L, 0-1) took the loss after tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up eight runs (two unearned) on six hits for DSU.  Alec Rickabaugh (W, 1-0) earned the pitching victory for the Red Raiders, tossing 2 2/3 innings in relief.  He allowed three runs on seven hits.

Both teams will meet for the second time on Saturday morning (March 11).  First pitch is set for 10 a.m. (Central Time)/9 a.m. (Mountain Time) at Kino Sports Complex's Stadium.  The Trojans will also face NCAA Division II St. Cloud State (Minn.) on the same day at 1:30 p.m. (CT)/12:30 p.m. (MT) on Field #7 at Kino Sports Complex.
