TUCSON, Ariz. – Aquinas (Mich.) and Dakota State (S.D.) met for the second time within a week Saturday in the first game of Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational tripleheader at Lincoln Park North. The Saints plated a total of 11 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to defeat the Trojans 12-1.
Dakota State lost their fifth straight game, falling to 9-12 overall record. Aquinas raised their overall record to 15-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Saints took the first lead of the game in the top third inning. Mary Iliopoulos led off with a single and scored the game's first run of the game after Ann Hardin recorded an RBI double for 1-0 AC lead.
Aquinas plated seven runs in the top fourth inning to widen their lead to 8-0.
The Trojans snapped their scoring drought with a run scored in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Jasmin Lucero and Tatum Ronke led off with back-to-back singles. Peyton Brokiewicz reached on base by a fielder's choice and advanced Ronke to second base while Lucero was forced out at third base.
Emma Marsh reached on base caused by AC's defensive error, allowing Ronke to score DSU's first run of the game. The Trojans trailed 8-1 by the end of the fourth inning.
Aquinas made it 12-1 after scoring four runs in the top fifth inning.
The Trojans could not extend the game into sixth inning as they left two runners on base, securing the victory for the Saints.
Hardin was 3-of-3 at the plate with two doubles, a single and drove in four runs for the Saints. Morgan Giddings added a double and two RBIs. Iliopoulos had two singles and three RBIs.
Aquinas outhit Dakota State 11-8 in the game. The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the Saints four runners left on base.
Luna (L, 5-2) took the loss, despite working for five innings on the pitching mound for DSU. She gave up 12 runs (3 unearned) on 11 hits.
Mia Loya (W, 4-0) earned the victory after tossing four innings. She allowed an unearned run on seven hits. Mandy Rosol pitched a scoreless fifth inning in relief, giving up a hit.
Dakota State looks to snap their losing skid as they play Lawrence Tech (Mich.) in the second game of the Tucson Softball Invitational Saturday.
