TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) exploded for a total of nine runs in the first two innings in the second game of the tripleheader versus Lawrence Tech (Mich.) at Lincoln Park North, as part of the Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational Games. The Trojans earned their 10th victory of the season after rolling past the Blue Devils by the score of 10-2 in six innings.
Dakota State snapped their five-game losing skid, improving their overall record to 10-12. Lawrence Tech dropped to 8-14 overall record.
DSU plated five runs in the bottom first inning to earn a 5-0 early lead. Kailee McFadden led off with a walk. She swiped two bases. Kayla Schmell reached on base caused by LTU's defensive error, allowing McFadden to score the game's first run for DSU 1-0 lead.
Trojan Nicole Stewart reached safely on base by another Blue Devils' defensive error, advancing Schmell to second base in the top first inning. Jasmin Lucero produced an RBI double to score Schmell for DSU's 2-0 lead, and advanced Stewart to third base.
Dakota State widen their lead to 4-0 in the top first frame, thanks to Tatum Ronke's 2-RBI double (Stewart and Lucero scored). Emma Marsh added an RBI to score Ronke to make it 5-0 in favor of the Trojans.
The Trojans continued their offensive explosion with four runs scored in the bottom half of the second inning, all runs scored with two outs. Schmell reached on base by a walk. Stewart followed that up with a single to advance Schmell to second base. Lucero hit a 2-RBI double to score Schmell and Stewart to balloon DSU's lead to 7-0.
Dakota State made it 8-0 after Ronke hit another RBI double to score Lucero in the bottom second frame. Peyton Brokiewicz recorded an RBI double to score Ronke for DSU's 9-0 lead.
Lawrence Tech scored twice in the top third inning after Alina Molette's 2-run home run, trimming DSU's lead to 9-2.
Brokiewicz and Marsh hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the bottom sixth inning. Kelly Drake produced an RBI single to score Brokiewicz, securing the mercy rule victory for the Trojans.
Dakota State hit five doubles in the game. Ronke and Lucero each had two doubles and drove in three runs. Brokiewicz also had a double, two singles and an RBI. Stewart, Marsh, Drake and Zephier each had a hit. Schmell, Marsh and Drake also had an RBI. McFadden swiped two bases.
Molette had a home run and registered two RBIs for Lawrence Tech. Meredith Adams recorded two singles. Bailey Brown, Brooke Dillon, Genna Skalski, Jackie Mattingly and Cherilyn Banas each had a hit.
DSU outhit LTU 12-8 in the game. The Trojans left six runners on base while the Blue Devils had one runner left on base.
Drake (W, 4-7) earned a complete game victory for Dakota State. She tossed six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits.
Sydney Schulz (L, 1-2) recorded the loss despite giving up five runs to the first five batters of the game for Lawrence Tech. Brittney Bult worked for 5 2/3 innings in relief, allowing five runs on 10 hits.
Dakota State concludes their Tucson Invitational with a game versus Robert Morris (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.
