TUCSON, Ariz. – NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State poured in eight runs in the first inning Sunday morning, propelling to a 17-5 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) in the Tucson (Ariz.) Baseball Invitational at Kino Sports Complex.
The Trojans concluded the tournament with a 0-6 overall record. Southwest Minnesota State lifted their overall record to 5-5.
SMSU produced eight runs on seven hits in the top first inning to grab an 8-0 early lead.
Dakota State got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second inning with three runs scored. Dyshawn Proudlove led off with a triple. Connor Nagel followed that up with a walk. Garrett Mullins reached safely on base caused by Mustangs' defensive error, allowing Proudlove to score for DSU's first run of the game (Trojans trailed 8-1).
Jalen Boyd added an RBI single to score Nagel as the Trojans trimmed Southwest Minnesota State's lead to 8-2 in the bottom second inning (Mullins advanced to second base). DSU reduced their deficit to 8-3 after David Kirby's RBI single to score Mullins.
The Mustangs plated five runs in the top fifth inning to widen their lead to 13-3.
Dakota State scored once in the bottom sixth inning. Zach Sutera led off with a double. Smith Kemper hit a single to advance Sutera to third base. Dyshawn Proudlove recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Sutera as DSU trailed at 13-4.
Southwest Minnesota State scored four more runs in the top seventh inning as their lead grew to 17-4.
The Trojans scored once in the bottom seventh frame. Jalen Boyd led off with a single and swiped to second base. Andrew Hesse produced an RBI single to score Boyd (SMSU led 17-5). Dakota State left a runner on base as the game ended in the seventh inning in a nine-inning game.
Boyd was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Proudlove had a triple and an RBI. Sutera added a double. Smith Kemper recorded a single. Kirby and Hesse each had a single and an RBI. Kemper, Hesse and Boyd each swiped one base.
Jayden Fleck, Tanner Strommen, Shane Sellner and Cole VanderBeek each had two hits for the Mustangs. Sellner drove in a game-high five runs, while VanderBeek added three RBIs.
SMSU outhit DSU 10-7 in the game. The Mustangs left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans three runners left on base.
Kirby (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed three innings and allowed eight runs (four unearned) on eight hits. He struck out five SMSU's batters. Dakota State used three pitchers in relief – Trey Randel (3 innings), Justin Mettling and Boyd (both in the seventh inning).
SMSU's Jared Tschetter (W, 1-1) earned the victory after working for six innings. He gave up four runs (one unearned) on five hits. He recorded four strikeouts. Michael Revenig pitched in the seventh inning and allowed one run on two hits.
Dakota State returns home next weekend as they play home-and-away with Briar Cliff (Iowa). The Trojans host the Chargers at Flynn Field on Saturday (March 18) at 1:30 p.m. with a doubleheader. On Sunday (March 19), DSU heads to Sioux City to take on Briar Cliff for another doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
