Dakota State (S.D.) will be sending four men's long distance runners to Saturday's meet. They will be running in the Midland (Neb.) Warriors Half-Marathon for their opportunity to qualify for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in full marathon. The half-marathon meet, hosted by Midland (Neb.) University, is expected to start at 10:30 a.m. in Fremont, Neb.
About Midland (Neb.) Half-Marathon
Two seniors (Michael Carson and Taylor Hauge) and two freshmen (Maxwell Cruse and Braden Curnow) will be running in the Midland (Neb.) Half-Marathon meet on Saturday morning in Fremont, Neb. for Dakota State (S.D.). The half-marathon meet, hosted by Midland (Neb.), gives long-distance runners their chance to qualify for the 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in full marathon. The race will begin at 10:30 a.m. between Valley and Fremont. Runners will need to meet the national qualifying standard time to advance to the national meet—between 1 hour, 13 minutes and 30 seconds and 1 hour, 15 minutes for the men's runners. The 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will be held in Gulf Shores, Ala. from May 25-27.
Mayfield qualifies for NAIA Outdoor Track national meet in full marathon
Karen Mayfield ran in the Fremont (Neb.) Half-Marathon meet on Dec. 4, where she posted a national qualifying time for Dakota State (S.D.). A total of 15 runners completed the women's half-marathon race. Mayfield qualified for the national outdoor meet for the second consecutive year, where she clocked a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes and 31 seconds and finished sixth in the race. She placed third in last year's NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in full marathon for the Trojans, where she earned NAIA All-American honor.
Men's 4 x 800-meter relay team post season-best time at NAIA Indoor Track Nationals
The Trojan men's 4 x 800-meter relay team—consisted of Cameron Harming, Alex Derr, Claudio Tejada and Mark Moeller—competed in the national semifinals at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. on March 2. There were a total of 26 relay teams in the men's 4 x 800-meter relay national semifinals, where Dakota State (S.D.) was seeded No. 21. The DSU men's 4 x 800-meter relay team clocked a season-best time of 7 minutes, 50.26 seconds in the second heat, which was the third-best time in the heat. Dakota State fell a pair of places short of advancing to the finals, placing 10th overall in the national semifinals.
Moeller earns his third overall NAIA All-American honor
Mark Moeller ran in the first heat of the men's 800-meter run national semifinals at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 3 in Johnson City, Tenn. He clocked a season-best time of 1 minute, 53.87 seconds to place fourth in the first heat for the Trojans. His time was just .72 seconds short of tying the DSU Indoor Track's school record in the men's 800-meter run, held by former NAIA All-American Tyler Van Peursem (1:53.13). Moeller clocked the fifth-fastest time in the national finals on March 4, recording a time of 1:54.42. He earned his third overall NAIA All-American recognition during his impressive running career at Dakota State (S.D.). It was his second NAIA Indoor Track All-American honor in the men's 800-meters, where he also competed in the national finals in 2015.
Trojans to kick off 2017 outdoor season on March 24-25 in Wayne, Neb.
Dakota State (S.D.) will kick off their 2017 outdoor track & field season on March 24-25 as they compete in the two-day event, the Wildcat Classic. The meet is hosted by NCAA Division II Wayne State (Neb.) in Wayne, Neb. The Trojans have scheduled a total of eight outdoor track & field meets during the spring. The North Star Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field conference meet is set for May 12-13 in Jamestown, N.D.
