SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to a pair of early leads in a non-conference baseball doubleheader action versus Briar Cliff (Iowa) Sunday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Field. The Trojans were unable to hold on to their lead as the Chargers completed a doubleheader sweep by the score of 20-8 and 11-3.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-8. Briar Cliff, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, lifted their overall record to 6-14.
The Trojans begin their North Star Athletic Association conference play next weekend as they stay on the road. DSU is slated to visit Viterbo (Wis.) in a four-game series, starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and another doubleheader next Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game 1 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 20, Dakota State (S.D.) 8 – FINAL
Dakota State earned a 1-0 opening lead, thanks to Briar Cliff's four defensive errors in the top first inning. Smith Kemper reached on base by BCU's error with two outs. Kemper swiped to second base and advanced to third base on the same play caused by another Chargers' defensive error. Dyshawn Proudlove reached safely on first after a dropped third strike, allowing Smith to score at home after Briar Cliff committed their third straight defensive error.
Brogan Secrist recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom first frame as BCU knotted the game at 1-1.
The Trojans plated four runs in the top second inning to extend their lead by four runs. Juan Sermo led off with a double. Trey Randel followed that up with a single and advanced Sermo to third bae. David Kirby produced an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Sermo (and advanced Randel to second base), giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
BCU answered back with seven runs scored in the bottom second inning, overtaking an 8-5 lead. Jacob Hom hit a 3-run home run, while Brady Harpenau, Secrist and J.P. Martin each added an RBI single.
Briar Cliff added two more runs caused by DSU's defensive miscue in the bottom third inning for a 10-5 lead. The Chargers exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning to widen their lead to 20-5.
DSU scored three times in the top half of the sixth inning. Sutera and Kemper each reached on base by a walk. Both Sutera and Kemper advanced one base after BCU's wild pitch. Andrew Hesse also reached on base by a walk, setting up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State.
A wild pitch by the Chargers allowed Sutera to score (Kemper and Hesse each advanced one base) as DSU's deficit was reduced to 20-6. Connor Nagel recorded DSU's fourth walk of the sixth inning for another bases loaded situation.
Dakota State trimmed Briar Cliff's lead to 20-8 after Garrett Mullins' 2-RBI double to score Kemper and Hesse in the top sixth inning.
Smith finished the game by going 1-of-2 at the plate with a home run, two walks and drove in three runs for the Trojans. He also swiped one base. Mullins added a double, walk and two RBIs. Sermo had a double and a walk. Kirby recorded a hit and an RBI. Sutera had three walks and scored twice.
Hom was 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run, double, single and produced a game-high six RBIs for the Chargers. Welsh added a triple, single and two RBIs. Martin had a home run, single and four RBIs. Harpenau was 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
BCU outhit DSU 16-5 in the game. The Trojans left nine runners on base compared to the Chargers eight runners left on base. Dakota State committed six defensive errors, while Briar Cliff had four defensive miscues.
Garrison Collier (L, 0-3) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (three unearned) on nine hits. Justin Mettling worked for 1 1/3 innings, while Hayden Rainey pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Taylor Delperdang (W, 2-2) earned the victory after pitching four innings. He gave up five runs (one unearned) on four hits. Luke Lindsey worked a scoreless fifth inning. Patrick Ryan pitched 1/3 inning and allowed three runs and four walks. Andrew Tibbetts closed out the game in the final 1 2/3 innings.
Game 2 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Dakota State raced to a 2-0 opening lead in the second game of the doubleheader. Jalen Boyd led off with a single. Kemper followed that up with a single with one out, advancing Boyd to second base. Mullins produced an RBI single to score Boyd for DSU's first lead of the game at 1-0.
On the same play, Kemper scored home after the Chargers committed a defensive error to extend DSU's lead to 2-0 in the top first frame.
Briar Cliff answered with five runs scored in the bottom first inning, earning a 5-2 lead over the Trojans. The Chargers produced four extra-base hits in the inning (Peyton Griesert with a double, Secrist with a triple, Harpenau with a double and Welsh with a triple).
BCU made it 7-2 in the bottom second inning after scoring two runs.
The Trojans cut the Chargers' lead to 7-3 in the top fourth inning. Mullins started the fourth inning with a walk. Nagel followed up with a single and advance Mullins to second base. A passed ball committed by BCU allowed Mullins and Nagel advance one base. Sermo produced an RBI ground out to score Mullins, reducing DSU's deficit down by four runs.
Briar Cliff scored once in the bottom fourth inning to extend their lead to 8-3. Ray Rude hit a 2-RBI double to make it 10-3 in favor of the Chargers in the fifth inning.
Secrist hit a solo home run in the bottom sixth inning as the Chargers' lead ballooned to 11-3.
Mullins was 1-of-1 at the plate with a single, two walks and an RBI for Dakota State. Boyd added two singles. Kemper and Nagel each had a hit. Sermo produced an RBI.
Secrist tallied three hits and drove in three runs in the game for Briar Cliff. Rude, Hom and Welsh each added two hits. Martin had a hit and recorded two stolen bases.
The Chargers had 12 hits in the game compared to the Trojans five hits. DSU committed five defensive miscues while BCU did not commit a defensive error. Briar Cliff left six runners on base while Dakota State had two runners left on base.
Kirby (L, 0-3) recorded the loss after working for five innings for Dakota State. He allowed ten runs (two unearned) on 11 hits and struck out three BCU's batters. Randel pitched in the sixth inning and gave up a run on one hit.
Andrew Stover (W, 3-1) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Briar Cliff. He tossed six innings and gave up three runs on five hits. He recorded six strikeouts. Alex Lamberson pitched a shutout seventh inning.
