La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Conference season Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 shutout victory over Viterbo (Wis.) at Copeland Park.  The V-Hawks won the second game of the doubleheader 7-0, earning a doubleheader split with the Trojans.

Dakota State snapped their eight-game losing streak to start the 2017 season, holding an overall record of 1-9.  Viterbo is 3-18 overall record.  Both teams are 1-1 record in the North Star.

DSU and VU will conclude their NSAA's four-game series in a rare Sunday morning doubleheader at Copeland Park.  The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 7 a.m.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Viterbo (Wis.) 0 – FINAL

The first game of each North Star conference's four-game series is a nine-inning game.

After two scoreless innings, Dakota State scored the first run of the game.  Garrison Collier reached on base by a walk with one out.  He swiped to second base.  Jalen Boyd hit a single and advanced Collier to third base.  Zach Sutera reached safely on first base caused by VU's defensive error, allowing Collier to score for DSU's 1-0 lead.

The Trojans prevented the V-Hawks to score in the bottom half of the third inning.  VU left bases full when the third inning ended, where Collier recorded a struck-out looking to D.J. Wilson of Viterbo.

DSU plated two runs in the top fifth inning to extend their lead by three runs.  David Kirby reached on base caused by V-Hawks' defensive miscue.  Kirby stole for second base.  Boyd produced an RBI single with one out to score Kirby for Trojans' 2-0 lead (Boyd advanced to second base on the same play).

After Sutera's ground out to first base and advanced Boyd to third base, Smith Kemper recorded an RBI single to score Boyd as Dakota State widen their lead to 3-0.

Collier hit an inside-the-park home run to kick off the top seventh inning for a 4-0 DSU lead.

Dakota State added a run in the top eighth inning.  Boyd recorded his fourth hit of the game with a single, followed by Sutera's single to advance Boyd to second base.  Both Boyd and Sutera advanced one base after VU's wild pitch.

Kemper recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Boyd as the Trojans' lead grew to 5-0 in the top eighth.

Viterbo left two runners on base in the final inning as Dakota State secured their first victory of the season.

Boyd was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four singles, an RBI and scored twice for the Trojans.  Collier registered a home run, an RBI, a walk and scored twice.  Kemper added a single and drove in two runs.  Juan Sermo had a double.  Sutera added a hit.

Boyd, Collier, Kemper and Kirby each swiped one base for DSU.  The Trojans' defense recorded a double play in the game, credited by Boyd, Kemper and Garrett Mullins.

Brent Stoughtenger, Mannie De La Rosa, Joe Cliver, Austin Schlaker, Noah Bouley and Jacob Stephenson each had a single for the V-Hawks.

DSU outhit VU 8-6 in the game.  The V-Hawks committed four defensive errors while the Trojans had one defensive miscue.  Viterbo left ten runners on base compared to the Trojans eight runners left on base.

Collier (W, 1-3) notched his first win of the season on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed seven innings and limited VU to five singles.  Collier struck out six V-Hawks' batters.  Dyshawn Proudlove (S, 1) pitched two scoreless innings in relief, giving up a hit for his first save of the season. 

John Costello (L, 0-3) recorded the loss after pitching seven innings on the pitching mound for Viterbo.  He gave up four runs (one unearned) on six hits.  Brian McGill worked for two innings, allowing a run on two hits.

Game 2 – Viterbo (Wis.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

Dakota State was unable to grab the first lead of the game in the opening inning of the second game.  The Trojans left runners on third and second base.

Brad Giss hit an RBI single to give VU the first lead of the game in the bottom third inning at 1-0.  De La Rosa added an RBI single in the bottom fifth frame to extend V-Hawks' lead to 2-0.

VU exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to widen their lead to 7-0.  The V-Hawks produced three doubles in the inning from Wilson, Ethan Bell and De La Rosa.

The Trojans left a runner in the final inning as Viterbo secured the victory.

Kemper was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State.  Sutera and Kirby each added a single.  Kemper and Sutera each swiped one base.

Giss went 3-of-3 with a double, two singles and drove in two runs for Viterbo.  De La Rosa added a double, single and two RBIs.  Bell, Sean Russell and Bouley each added a hit.

The V-Hawks recorded nine hits in the game compared to the Trojans' four hits.  DSU left nine runners on base while VU had seven runners left on base.

Hayden Rainey (L, 0-2) took the loss after working for five-plus innings for Dakota State.  He gave up five runs (one unearned) on eight hits.  Rainey struck out five VU's batters.  Trey Randel worked for two outs in the bottom sixth inning, allowing two runs (one unearned) on one hit.  Justin Mettling tossed the final out of the sixth inning.

Max Verdegan (W, 1-3) earned the victory for Viterbo.  He pitched six innings and limited the Trojans to three hits.  He recorded eight strikeouts.  Austin Stibbe tossed a scoreless seventh inning, giving up a single.
