FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) could not overcome Waldorf's (Iowa) offensive explosion in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball four-game series opener Saturday afternoon at Forest City High School Baseball Field.  The Warriors won the first game by the score of 28-4 in seven innings.  The Trojans held a 1-0 lead in the second game, but fell short as WU scored three runs in the bottom sixth inning for a 3-1 victory.

Dakota State fell to 1-13 overall record and 1-5 record in the North Star conference action.  Waldorf improved to 9-23 overall record and 2-4 NSAA record.

Both teams will play another doubleheader Sunday afternoon to conclude their four-game series.  The first game is set for 12 p.m. at Forest City High School Baseball Field.

Game 1 – Waldorf (Iowa) 28, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL/7 innings

Waldorf scored five runs in the opening inning and added three more runs in the bottom second inning to cruise to an 8-0 lead.

Dakota State plated one run in the top half of the third inning.  Andrew Hesse reached on base by a walk with two outs.  Garrison Collier drilled an RBI double to score Hesse as the Trojans trailed 8-1.

WU exploded for seven runs in the bottom third to widen their lead to 15-1.

The Trojans scored once in the top fifth.  Trey Randel hit a single with two outs.  Hesse followed that up with a double and advanced Randel to third base.  Justin Mettling reached on base by a walk.  Zach Sutera produced an RBI walk to score Randel as DSU cut WU's lead to 15-2.

Waldorf extended their lead to 17-2 in the bottom fifth inning with two runs scored.

After Connor Nagel led off the top sixth inning with a walk, Juan Sermo blasted a 2-run home run with one out as the Trojans trimmed Warriors' lead to 17-4.

WU put together 11 runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to balloon their lead to 28-4, securing the game in seven innings.

Sermo had a home run and drove in two runs for Dakota State.  Hesse added a double and a walk.  Collier had a double and an RBI.  Smith Kemper and Randel each had a single.  Kemper swiped one base.  Nagel had two walks.  Mettling, Sutera and David Kirby each registered a walk.

Garrett Gillen had two doubles and produced six RBIs for Waldorf.  Jacob Tedesco added two doubles, two singles and five RBIs.  Bruce Mau had three hits and four RBIs.  Riley MacDonald recorded three hits and three RBIs.

WU outhit DSU 28-5 in the game.  The Trojans committed five defensive errors compared to the Warriors' zero errors.  Waldorf left 12 runners on base, while DSU left seven runners on base.

Collier (L, 1-4) took the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.  Mettling pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and gave up two runs on four hits.  Hesse came in and pitched the sixth inning for DSU.

Nic Ray (W, 2-3) earned the victory for Waldorf.  He pitched six innings and allowed four runs on four hits.  Adam Kovash worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Game 2 – Waldorf (Iowa) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

Dakota State took the first lead of the game in the fifth inning of the second game of the four-game series, but could not hold on to their lead as the Warriors rallied back for three runs in the sixth inning.

Both teams were unable to score in the first four innings of the game.

Garrett Mullins led off the fifth inning with a single for the Trojans.  He advanced to second base after a wild pitch committed by the Warriors.  After two outs were recorded, WU committed their second wild pitch of the inning to allow Mullins advance to third base.  Randel reached on base by a walk.  Hesse followed up with an RBI double to score Mullins as DSU grabbed a 1-0 lead.

Mitch Keeran had an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom sixth inning for Waldorf.  Miguel Castro added an RBI double to score Mitch Keeran as WU overtook a 2-1 lead.  Castro scored caused by DSU's wild pitch to extend Warriors' lead to 3-1.

Dakota State went three-and-out in the final inning as the Waldorf secured the victory.

Hesse had a double and an RBI for the Trojans.  Sutera, Mullins and Kirby each added a single.  Sutera had a stolen base.  Nagel and Radnel each had a walk.

Mitch Keeran had two hits and an RBI for the Warriors.  Castro added a double and an RBI.  Michael Keeran and Gillen each had a hit.

WU had five hits in the game compared to DSU four hits.  The Warriors left six runners on base while the Trojans left four runners on base.

Dakota State's Hayden Rainey (L, 0-3) took the loss, despite battling a pitcher's duel with Waldorf's Trevor Bauer.  Rainey tossed six innings and gave up three runs on five hits.

Bauer (W, 3-3) pitched a complete game victory for the Warriors.  He allowed one run on four hits.  He recorded eight strikeouts.
