MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) outhit Bellevue (Neb.) 8-5 in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association's (NSAA) Softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Thue Softball, but the Bruins held on to a 2-0 victory over the Trojans.  BU posted a 10-2 six-inning victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.

It was the home opener for Dakota State, who fell to 11-22 overall record and 4-12 record in North Star conference play.  Bellevue, receiving votes to the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won their 12th straight game to raise their overall record to 31-8 and 10-2 record in NSAA.

Both teams play another doubleheader Sunday to conclude their North Star conference's four-game series.  First game is set for 12 noon at Thue Softball Complex.

Game 1:  (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 2, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

Hannah Carter led off the game with a single for Bellevue.  Emily Miller followed up with a hit-by-pitch to advance Carter to second base.  Maddie Siedlik recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Carter to third base and Emily Miller to second base.

Erin Sharpe produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Carter for BU's 1-0 lead in the top first inning.

The Bruins made it 2-0 in the top second frame as Alex Tooley smashed a solo home run.

Dakota State was unable to get their scoring opportunity in the bottom third inning.  Kelly Drake kicked off the bottom third with a single and advanced to second base after Megan Zephier's sacrifice bunt.  Kailee McFadden hit a single to advance Drake to third base.  Drake was caught stealing attempt to head home as the Bruins held on to a 2-0 lead after three innings.

The Trojans could not convert another scoring opportunities in the fourth inning, despite getting doubles from Nicole Stewart and Tatum Ronke.

DSU also left runners on third and base in the fifth inning as the Bruins hang on to a 2-0 lead.

Dakota State went three-and-out in the final inning as Bellevue secured a two-run victory.

Ronke was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and single for the Trojans.  Stewart added a double.  McFadden, Kayla Schmell, Peyton Brokiewicz, Drake and Zephier each added a hit.  McFadden swiped one base.

Tooley went 2-of-3 with a home run, single and an RBI for the Bruins.  Carter added two singles.  Sharpe had a hit and an RBI.  Carter had a stolen base.

DSU left six runners on base compared to BU three runners left on base.

Drake (L, 5-11) recorded the loss in the pitching circle, despite tossing a complete game for Dakota State.  She allowed two runs on five hits.  She struck out three BU's batters.

Sharpe (W, 6-0) remained undefeated as she pitched a complete game for Bellevue.  She gave up eight hits and recorded three strikeouts.

Game 2:  (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/6 innings

Bellevue took advantage of their fast start in the second game of the four-game series, scoring five runs in the opening inning.

Sydney Robertson hit a single with one out and swiped to second base for BU.  Siedlik followed up with a single and advanced Robertson to third base.  After Sharpe's ground out to advance Siedlik to second base, Kaitlyn Kinman hit 2-RBI single to score Robertson and Siedlik for Bruins' 2-0 lead (Kinman advanced to second base on the throw).

The Bruins continued their scoring explosion in the top first inning as Tooley hit an RBI single to score Kiman for 3-0 BU lead.  Sayde Woten drilled an RBI double to score Tooley as Bruins' lead grew to 4-0.  Emily Gigax followed that up with an RBI single to score Woten for as BU's lead went up to 5-0.

Ronke blasted a solo home run as Dakota State snapped their scoring drought in the bottom second inning, trimming BU's lead down to 5-1.  It was her fourth home run of the season for Ronke.

A pair of solo home runs by Sharpe and Tooley extended Bellevue's lead to 7-1 in the top third inning.

The Bruins scored three runs in the top sixth inning.  Emily Miller, pinch hitter for Michaela Miller, hit a single followed by a pair of bunt singles by Carter and Robertson to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs for BU.  Sharpe hit 3-RBI base-clearing double to score Michaela Miller, Carter and Robertson as BU's lead ballooned to 10-1.

The Trojans scored once in the bottom half of the sixth inning and could not extend the game into seventh inning.  Stewart led off with a double.  She advanced to third base after Jasmin Lucero's ground out to shortstop.  Ronke recorded an RBI ground out to score Stewart as DSU trailed 10-2.

Bellevue secured the victory as Dakota State left a runner on base when the game ended.

Stewart and Brokiewicz each had a double and single for the Trojans.  Ronke had a home run and drove in two runs.  She swiped one base.  Kaysea Luna had a single.

Sharpe had a home run, double and recorded a game-high four RBIs for the Bruins.  Carter, Robertson, Siedlik and Tooley each registered two hits in the game.  Kiman and Tooley each had two RBIs.  Woten and Gigax each recorded a hit and an RBI.

BU outhit DSU 14-6 in the game.  The Trojans left five runners on base compared to the Bruins four runners on base.

Luna (L, 5-8) recorded the loss after working six innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She gave up 10 runs on 14 hits.

Kelli Fisher (W, 18-3) earned the victory for Bellevue.  She tossed a complete game and gave up two runs on eight hits.  She struck out eight DSU's batters.
