MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State's (S.D.) comeback bid in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball doubleheader Sunday fell short to Bellevue (Neb.) 3-2 at Thue Softball Complex.  The Trojans could not overcome Bruins' offensive explosion in the four-game series finale as BU posted a 22-3 victory.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 11-24 and 4-14 record in North Star conference play.  Bellevue, receiving votes to the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won their 14th straight game to raise their overall record to 33-8.  The Bruins are c urrently leading the North Star conference with a 12-2 NSAA record.

Dakota State look to swing back in the winning column as they continue their home stand Tuesday evening.  The Trojans host their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a non-conference doubleheader.  First game of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. at Thue Softball Complex.

Game 1:  (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

The first game of the doubleheader featured a pitcher's duel between Bellevue's Kelli Fisher and Dakota State's Kelly Drake.  Both teams did not score through the first four innings of the game.

The Bruins left runners on third and second in the top fourth inning after Alex Tooley reached on base by a walk and Emily Gigax's double.

Bellevue broke their scoring drought with a pair of runs scored in the top fifth frame.  After recording the first two outs of the top fifth inning, the Bruins recorded three straight hits including a pair of extra-base hits.  Sydney Robertson hit a single.  Kaitlyn Kinman drilled an RBI triple to deep right and scored Robertson for BU first run of the game.

Erin Sharpe followed up with an RBI double to score Kinman as Bellevue extended their lead to 2-0 in the top fifth inning.

Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chance in the bottom half of the fifth inning, despite a triple from Peyton Brokiewicz.

The Bruins added a run in the top sixth inning to extend their lead to 3-0.  Gigax hit a double with one out.  Sarah Zeleny produced an RBI single with two outs to score Kaitlyn Goney – pinch runner for Gigax – as BU extended their lead by three runs.

The Trojans snapped their scoreless drought in the bottom seventh inning.  Nicole Stewart led off with a single, but she was forced out at second base after Jasmin Lucero's fielder choice.  Tatum Ronke smashed a 2-run home run as DSU trimmed BU's lead to 3-2.  It was Ronke's fifth home run of the season for Dakota State.

The Bruins secured the victory after recording the final two outs in the bottom seventh.

Ronke had a home run and drove in two runs for the Trojans.  Brokiewicz had a triple.  Kayla Schmell and Stewart each had a single.  Megan Zephier had a walk. 

Gigax recorded two doubles for the Bruins.  Kinman added a triple, single and an RBI.  Sharpe had a double and an RBI.  Zeleny registered a hit and an RBI.  Robertson had two singles. 

BU outhit DSU 9-4 in the game.  The Bruins left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans two runners left on base.

Drake (L, 5-12) took the loss after tossing a complete game for Dakota State.  She gave up three runs on nine hits.  She recorded six strikeouts.

Fisher (W, 19-3) earned a complete game victory for Bellevue.  She limited the Trojans to two runs on four hits.  She also struck out six DSU's batters.

Game 2:  (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 22, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL/5 innings

Bellevue (Neb.) used a fast start in the four-game series finale and never looked back as they recorded a 22-3 victory in five innings.

Carter led off the game with a solo home run to give BU a 1-0 opening lead.  The Bruins continued their scoring run with three more runs, highlighted by Gigax's 2-RBI double to put the Bruins up 4-0.

Schmell and Stewart hit back-to-back doubles as the Trojans cut Bruins' lead to 4-1 in the bottom first inning.

Bellevue reached safely on base nine consecutive times in the top third inning as they exploded for nine runs and eight hits, including a 3-run home run by Sayde Woten.  The Bruins' lead grew to 13-1 after the top fourth frame was over.

Lucero blasted a solo home run to kick off the bottom half of the third inning as DSU trailed 13-2.  It was her third home run of the season.  The Trojans were unable to continue their scoring score as they left bases loaded when the fourth inning ended.

BU plated five more runs in the top fourth inning to extend their lead to 18-2.  Michaela Miller had an RBI triple, followed by Zeleny's RBI single in the inning.  Emily Miller added an RBI single, while Tooley had a 2-RBI single to complete the five-run fourth inning.

The Bruins made it 22-2 in the top fifth inning after scoring four runs.

The Trojans scored once in the bottom fifth frame.  Brokiewicz reached safely to second base after a dropped third strike and an error committed by the Bruins.  Brokiewicz advanced to third base after a wild pitch by Lexi LcCalsey.  Emma Marsh produced an RBI ground out to score Brokiewicz (BU led 22-3).

Stewart had a double and an RBI for Dakota State.  Schmell added a double.  Lucero had a home run and an RBI.  Marsh had a hit and an RBI.  Kailee McFadden had a single.  Schmell, Ronke and Zephier each had a walk.

Twelve Bellevue players recorded at least a hit in the game.  Tooley had three doubles, single and drove in a game-high six runs.  Carter added three hits and two RBIs.  Kinman, Emily Miller and Sharpe each had two hits and an RBI.  Woten had a home run and three RBIs.  Gigax had a double and two RBIs.  Michaela Miller had three hits and and an RBI.

The Bruins pound 22 hits in the game compared to the Trojans 6 hits.  DSU left eight runners on base, while BU had six runners left on base.

Luna (L, 5-9) recorded the loss after pitching five innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State.

Bellevue's LeCalsey (W, 8-3) earned a complete game victory after working for five innings.  She allowed three runs (one unearned) on six hits.  She recorded six strikeouts.
