MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) won the slugfest versus Winnipeg (Manitoba) in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Flynn Field.  The Trojans started fast, but had to rally back for a 15-14 game one victory.  UW answered back in the second game, defeating DSU by the score of 13-5 to earn a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 2-22 overall record and 2-14 record in North Star Athletic Association conference games.  Winnipeg is 5-29 overall record and 3-13 NSAA record.

Dakota State remains home next weekend as they host Valley City State (N.D.) in the NSAA's four-game series.  Winnipeg returns home as they host Dickinson State (N.D.) in the North Star's four-game series.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 15, Winnipeg (Manitoba) 14 – FINAL

Dakota State's offensive exploded for nine runs in the opening inning of the nine-inning game.  Jalen Boyd led off with a walk.  Andrew Hesse followed up with a single and advanced Boyd to third base.  Smith Kemper reached safely on base caused UW's defensive error and produced an RBI to score Boyd for DSU's 1-0 lead.

Connor Nagel reached on base by a fielder's choice (Kemper was out at second and Hesse advanced to third base) for the Trojans in the bottom first frame.  Juan Sermo recorded a walk to set up a bases loaded situation with one out.

With two outs, David Kirby had an RBI walk to score Hesse as the Trojans extended their lead to 2-0.  DSU then produced seven consecutive singles – Trey Randel (2 RBIs), Zach Sutera (1 RBI), Boyd (1 RBI), Hesse (2 RBIs), Kemper, and Nagel (1 RBI).to produce seven runs, expanding their lead to 9-0.

Winnipeg answered back with two runs in the top second inning.  Cole Paquin led off with a double.  Garrett Jewell reached on base by a walk.  After Jackson Dartnell's ground out to advance Paquin to third and Jewell to second, Aiden Brook hit a 2-RBI two-out double to score Paquin and Jewell as Wesmen cut DSU's lead to 9-2.

UW scored five times in the top third inning to reduce their deficit to 9-7.  Cole Armstrong had an RBI single, while Jewell added a 2-RBI single.  Austin Pistawka had an RBI walk while Nik Kauenhofen added an RBI hit-by-pitch to complete Wesmen's five-run third inning.

Sermo led off the bottom fourth with a solo home run as the Trojans' lead grew to 10-7.  It was his third home run of the season.

Winnipeg produced another 5-run inning in the top fifth inning to earn their first lead of the game, highlighted by Armstrong's 3-run home run to give Wesmen a 12-10 lead.

The Wesmen scored another run in the top sixth inning caused by Trojans' defensive miscue for a 13-10 lead.

DSU scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Sermo reached safely on base caused by UW's defensive error.  He advanced to second base by a passed ball by Wesmen's catcher.  Garrett Mullins recorded an RBI single to score Sermo as Dakota State cut UW's lead to 13-11.

Mullins swiped to second base and advanced to third base by UW pitcher's balk in the bottom sixth inning for the Trojans.  Kirby recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Mullins as DSU trailed by one run at 13-12.

Jewell had an RBI single in the top seventh inning to give Winnipeg a 14-12 lead.

The Trojans came-from-behind in the bottom eighth inning as they scored three runs.  Sermo hit a single with one out.  Mullins reached on base by a walk and advanced Sermo to second base.  Kirby drilled a 2-RBI double to score Sermo and Mullins as Dakota State knotted the game at 14-14 (Kirby advanced to third base on the same base caused by UW's defensive error).

With two outs in the bottom eighth inning, Sutera reached safely by a missed catch by Jewell to allow Kirby score as the Trojans regained their lead at 15-14.

Dakota State secured the game in the ninth inning, as the Wesmen left a runner on second base when Mike Sigrist hit a double with two outs.

A total of 29 runs, 25 hits and 14 defensive errors were recorded in the game by both teams.

Every Trojan batters registered at least a hit in the game.  Kirby was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and drove in four runs.  Sermo added a home run, single and an RBI.  Hesse had two singles and two RBIs.  Mullins had two hits, an RBI and recorded two stolen bases.  Randel recorded a single and two RBIs.  Sutera, Boyd and Kemper each had a single and an RBI. 

Armstrong had a home run, single and tallied four RBIs for the Wesmen.  Jewell added a double, two singles and three RBIs.  Paquin, Dartnell and Brook each had two hits.  Brook recorded two RBIs.  Kauenhofen, Tyler Moskalyk and Pistawka each had an RBI.

DSU had 13 hits in the game compared to UW 12 hits.  The Wesmen committed nine defensive errors while the Trojans had five defensive errors.  Winnipeg left 12 runners on base.  Dakota State had six runners left on base.

Dyshawn Proudlove started the game on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He worked the first three innings and gave up seven runs on four hits.  Randel tossed 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed seven runs (three unearned) on six hits.  Boyd (W, 1-1) earned the victory after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.  He limited UW to one hit.

Cody Bartel worked for two outs in the first inning, giving up nine runs on five hits for the Wesmen.  Max Rydholm pitched 6 2/3 innings in relief and allowed five runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  Paquin (L, 0-6) recorded the loss, despite giving up an unearned run on one hit in 2/3 innings.

Game 2 – Winnipeg (Manitoba) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

The Wesmen grabbed its first lead of the game in the first inning of the NSAA Baseball's four-game series finale.  With two outs and Sigrist (reached safely after DSU's defensive error and advanced to second and third base after a pair of outs) on third base, Sigrist scored home after a wild pitch committed by the Trojans (UW leads 1-0).

Dakota State answered back with a run scored in the bottom first frame.  Kemper reached first base by base-on-balls.  Nagel smashed an RBI double to score Kemper as the Trojans tied the game at 1-1.

Winnipeg plated five runs in the top third inning, thanks to Brook's 3-RBI double to grab a 6-1 lead.

The Trojans responded back with three runs in the bottom third inning.  Boyd led off with a single.  Kemper blasted a 2-run home run over the left field fence as DSU trimmed UW's lead to 6-3.

Nagel and Sermo hit back-to-back singles for Dakota State in the bottom third.  A balk committed by UW's pitcher advanced Nagel to third base and Sermo to second base.  Kirby recorded an RBI bunt single to score Nagel as the Trojans trailed at 6-4.

The Wesmen scored five times in the top fifth inning to extend their lead to 11-4.  Jewell added a solo home run to make it 12-4 in favor of UW in the top sixth inning.

Marc Lepore followed up with a triple and scored home from Zac Comeault's RBI single to give Winnipeg a 13-4 lead.

Dakota State added a run in the bottom sixth frame.  Boyd hit a single with one out and advanced to third base after Kemper's double.  Nagel produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Boyd as the Trojans trimmed Wesmen's lead to 13-5.

DSU left a runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for Winnipeg.

Kemper was 3-of-3 at the plate with a home run, two doubles and drove in two runs for Dakota State.  Nagel was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, single and two RBIs.  Kemper and Nagel each swiped one base.  Boyd had two singles.  Kirby added a single and an RBI.  Hesse and Sermo each had a single. 

Jewell had a home run, single and collected three RBIs for Winnipeg.  Lepore added two hits.  Brooke had a double and three RBIs.  Curtis de Pena registered a double and an RBI.  Comeault and Paquin each had a hit and an RBI. 

The Trojans outhit the Wesmen 10-9 in the game.  DSU left nine runners on base while UW had five runners left on base.

Justin Mettling (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He tossed four innings and gave up eight runs (two unearned) on five hits.  Mullins worked for one inning in relief and allowed three unearned runs on one hit.  Kemper pitched for two innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits.

Kauenhofen (W, 1-6) tossed a complete game win for the Wesmen.  He allowed five runs on ten hits.
