YANKTON, S.D. – Mount Marty (S.D.) jumped to a quick start and held off Dakota State (S.D.) 7-3 in the first game of the non-conference softball doubleheader at Riverside Park Monday evening. The Trojans had a 3-2 lead before heading into the final inning, but the Lancers rallied back with two runs scored for a 4-3 game two victory.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 14-29. Mount Marty improved to 12-18 overall record. Both teams will play again seven days later (next Monday) at Thue Softball Complex for another non-conference doubleheader.
The Trojans stay on the road Wednesday evening as they visit Dordt (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader. First game of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. at Open Space Park in Sioux Center, Iowa on the campus of Dordt College.
Game 1: Mount Marty (S.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Mount Marty exploded for three runs in the bottom first inning to grab a fast 3-0 lead. Amber Krause hit a double with one out. After Amanda McCafferty reached on base by a walk, Karlee Kozak added an RBI double to score Krause for 1-0 MMC lead.
The Lancers made it 3-0 when Jessica Wirth hit a 2-RBI single with two outs and scored McCafferty and Kozak in the bottom first fame.
DSU ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the top fifth inning. Jasmin Lucero led off by being hit-by-pitch. Lucero advanced to second base after Tatum Ronke's sacrifice bunt. Lucero advanced to third base after MMC committed a wild pitch. Peyton Brokiewicz produced an RBI single to score Lucero as the Trojans cut Lancers' lead to 3-1.
With bases loaded situation in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Lancers answered back with a run score after Paige Kramer recorded an RBI walk to extend their lead to 4-1.
Nicole Stewart hit a single with two outs in the top sixth inning for Dakota State. Lucero followed up with a 2-run home run blast as the Trojans trailed 4-3. It was her fourth home run of the season.
Mount Marty responded back with a pair of home runs in the bottom sixth inning, a 2-run home run by Jennifer Mitera and a solo home run by Wirth as the Lancers' lead grew to 7-3.
The Trojans could not score in the final inning as MMC secured the game.
Lucero was 1-of-2 at the plate with a home run, scored two runs and drove in two runs for DSU. Brokiewicz registered two singles and an RBI. Stewart and Ronke each added a single.
Mitera and Wirth each had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for the Lancers. Kozak added a double and an RBI. Dani Lowe had two hits. Melissa Richert, Krause and McCafferty each had a hit.
MMC outhit DSU 10-5 in the game. The Lancers left 11 runners on base, while the Trojans had four runners left on base.
Kaysea Luna (L, 5-13) recorded the loss after working for six innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She allowed seven runs on ten hits. She recorded three strikeouts.
Bianca Minor (W, 5-3) earned the victory for Mount Marty. She tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. She struck out five DSU's batters. Brooke Becker pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
Game 2: Mount Marty (S.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Dakota State grabbed its first lead of the game in the second game of the doubleheader. Ronke led off the second inning with a single. She advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Brokiewicz. Emma Marsh hit a ground out to advance Ronke to third base. On the same play, Ronke scored home caused by MMC's defensive miscue to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Mitera and Wirth hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom second for Mount Marty. Lowe recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Mitera to third and Wirth to second. Shannon Smith hit a 2-RBI single to score Mitera and Wirth as the Lancers overtook the lead from the Trojans at 2-1.
DSU answered back with a pair of runs in the top third frame. Stewart and Lucero led off with back-to-back singles. Ronke hit a ground out to advance Stewart to third and Lucero to second. Brokiewicz produced a 2-RBI single as the Trojans regained their lead at 3-2.
The Lancers mounted a comeback in the bottom seventh inning, securing the victory. Richert reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error. Richert swiped to second base. Kramer hit an RBI single to score Richert to tie the game at 3-3 (Kramer advanced to second base on a throw during the same play).
Krause followed up with a walk-off RBI single to score Kramer as MMC earned a 4-3 victory with no outs in the bottom seventh inning.
Brokiewicz had a single and collected two RBIs in the game for Dakota State. Ronke and Lucero each had two singles and a run scored. Megan Zephier had a double and a single. Kelly Drake, Kailee McFadden and Stewart each had a hit.
Smith was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and two RBIs for Mount Marty. Paige Kramer added two singles and an RBI. Krause added a single and an RBI. Mitera and Wirth each had a hit. Richert swiped two bases.
The Trojans had 10 hits in the game compared to the Lancers 8 hits. DSU had nine runners left on base, while MMC had six runners left on base.
Drake (L, 8-13) took the loss after pitching six-plus innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She gave up four runs (two unearned) on eight hits. She recorded three strikeouts.
Minot started the game in the pitching circle for Mount Marty. She pitched five innings and allowed three runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Becker (W, 4-5) earned the victory after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. She gave up two hits and a walk.
