MADISON, S.D. – Valley City State (N.D.) took advantage of their fast start Saturday afternoon at Flynn Field, sweeping the North Star Athletic Association Baseball doubleheader over Dakota State (S.D.).  The Vikings won by the scores of 13-3 and 3-0 in the second game.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-24 and 2-16 record in North Star conference action. Valley City State won their seventh straight game to raise their overall record to 22-20 and 15-3 NSAA record (tied for second in the North Star standings with Mayville State, N.D.).

Both teams will conclude their four-game series Sunday afternoon with another doubleheader at Flynn Field.  First game is set for 12 noon.

Game 1:  Valley City State (N.D.) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL/7 innings

Valley City State scored at least three runs in the first four innings of the nine-inning game and cruised to a 13-3 game one victory in seven innings.

VCSU jumped to a 4-0 early lead in the opening inning.  Jared Meiklejohn led off with a single.  He advanced to second base when DSU committed a passed ball.  Brady Anderson reached on base by a walk.  Both Meiklejohn and Anderson swiped one base.  Ben Bruenjes struck out swinging, but reached safely on first caused by Trojan defensive error and allowed Meiklejohn to score to give VCSU their first run of the game.

With bases loaded situation for the Vikings, Anthony Necochea produced an RBI single to score Anderson to extend Vikings' lead to 2-0.  Grant Wehseler added an RBI walk to score Bruenjes to make it 3-0 in favor of Valley City State.  A wild pitch by Dakota State allowed Nate Bagby to score as VCSU's lead grew to 4-0.

The Trojans answered back with two runs in the bottom first frame.  Andrew Hesse hit a single with one out.  Smith Kemper followed up with a 2-run home run blast as the Trojans cut Vikings' lead to 4-2.  It was Kemper's fourth home run of the season for DSU.

VCSU scored three times in the top second inning, highlighted by Anderson's RBI double to score Meiklejohn who had a lead-off single.  The Vikings then added two more runs after a passed ball by the Trojans and an RBI single by Wehseler as Vikings ballooned their lead to 7-2.

Valley City State made it 10-2 in the top third inning with another three-run inning. 

Meiklejohn hit a 2-RBI double in the top half of the fourth frame as Vikings' lead continue to grow to 12-2.  Anderson added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Meiklejohn for VCSU 13-2 lead.

Garrett Mullins blasted his first career home run at DSU in the bottom seventh inning, trailing 13-3.  The Vikings secured the game by ten-run mercy run in a nine-inning game.

Hesse was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and a run scored for Dakota State.  Kemper added a home run and drove in two runs.  Mullins also had a home run and an RBI.  Zach Sutera registered a single.

Meiklejohn was 4-of-5 with two doubles, two singles, four runs scored and tallied two RBIs for Valley City State.  Anderson added a double, single and two RBIs.  He swiped two bases.  Wehseler had two hits and two RBIs.  Necochea recorded two singles and an RBI.

VCSU outhit DSU 11-5 in the game.  The Vikings left 11 runners on base compared to the Trojans two runners left on base.

Dyshawn Proudlove (L, 0-2) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He gave up 10 runs (4 unearned) on seven hits in three innings.  Trey Randel tossed two innings in relief, allowing three runs on two hits.  Jalen Boyd worked for two scoreless innings, yielding just two hits to the Vikings.

Jacob Van Vacter (W, 4-2) earned a complete game victory for Valley City State.  He gave up three runs on five hits and registered eight strikeouts.

Game 2:  Valley City State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

The Vikings scored all of their runs in the first two innings in the second game of the four-game series, shutting down the Trojans 3-0.

Meiklejohn kicked the second game with a single.  Anderson added a double to advance Meiklejohn to third base.  Bruenjes produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Meiklejohn for VCSU 1-0 lead.

The Vikings produced two more runs in the top second inning.  After Emmanuel Leyva reached on base by a walk, Meiklejohn hit a double and advanced Leyva to third base.  Joe Demers reached on base by a walk, followed by Anderson's RBI walk to score Leyva for VCSU's 2-0 lead.

A passed ball committed by the Trojans allowed Meiklejohn to score as the Vikings extended their lead to 3-0.

Both teams were unable to score for the rest of the game, securing the victory for Valley City State.

Juan Sermo had a double for Dakota State.  Hesse, David Kirby and Sutera each added a single.

Meiklejohn was 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single and scored two runs for the Vikings.  Anderson and Bruenjes each added a hit and an RBI.  Demers, Anderson, Bruenjes and Bagby each reached on base by a walk two times.  Brady Smith swiped two bases.

Both teams had four hits in the game.  VCSU left 12 runners on base, while DSU had 3 runners left on base.

Kirby (L, 0-8) took the loss after tossing five innings on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He gave up three runs on three hits.  Justin Mettling pitched two scoreless innings in relief, limiting the Vikings to one hit.

Andrew Frank (W, 5-5) posted his complete game victory for Valley City State.  He allowed four hits and recorded eight strikeouts.
