MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned back home Saturday afternoon at Thue Softball Complex, hosting Valley City State (N.D.) in a key North Star Athletic Association Softball four-game series.  The Vikings earned identical 8-4 scores to take the first two victories of the North Star's four-game series.

Dakota State fell to 14-31 overall record and 5-19 record in the North Star conference action.  Valley City State improved to 17-25 overall record and 8-12 NSAA record.

Both teams will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader Sunday afternoon.  First game is slated for 1 p.m. at Thue Softball Complex.

Game 1:  Valley City State (N.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

With Dakota State leading 4-2 after five innings in the first game of the four-game series, Valley City State scored six unanswered runs to earn an 8-4 victory.

The Vikings earned their first lead of the game in the top third inning.  Kadie Anderson reached on base by a walk with one out.  Haley Butterfield hit a ground out and advanced Anderson to second base.  Kelsey Hamade produced an RBI single to score Anderson for VCSU 1-0 lead.

DSU's Kailee McFadden and Kayla Schmell recorded back-to-back walks in the bottom third inning.  Jasmin Lucero blasted a 3-run home run with two outs as the Trojans gained their first lead of the game at 3-1.

VCSU scored once in the top fifth inning.  Anderson hit a single with one out.  Butterfield followed that up with an RBI double to score Anderson as the Vikings reduced Trojans' lead to 3-2.

Dakota State answered back with a run scored in the bottom half of the fifth frame.  McFadden led off with a walk and advanced to second base after Schmell's sacrifice bunt.  Nicole Stewart hit a single to advance McFadden to third base.  Lucero followed up with an RBI single to score McFadden to extend DSU's lead to 4-2.

The Vikings knotted the game in the top sixth inning after plating two runs.  Cassie Pautz reached on base caused by DSU's defensive error.  Emily Smith hit an RBI triple to score Pautz, while Smith scored home on the same play after the Trojans committed another defensive error as VCSU tied the game at 4-4.

Valley City State exploded for four runs in the top seventh inning.  Anderson led off with a double.  Butterfield followed up with a sacrifice bunt to advance Anderson to third base.  The Vikings regained their lead at 5-4 when Hamade hit an RBI single to score Anderson (Hamade advanced to second base on the same play).

Jayme Menard recorded a bunt single and advance Hamade to third base in the top seventh for VCSU.  Pautz reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error and score Hamade as the Vikings' lead grew to 6-4.

Kelli Moore hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Emma Maguire (pinch runner for Menard) as VCSU ballooned their lead to 7-4.  Smith added an RBI double to score Pautz to give VCSU an 8-4 lead.

The Trojans left a runner on second base when game ended, despite a double by Stewart.

Lucero was 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run, double, single and drove in all four DSU runs.  Steward added a double and a single.  McFadden reached on base by a walk three times and scored twice. 

Smith had a triple, double and tallied two RBIs for VCSU.  Anderson was 2-of-2 at the plate with a double, single and scored three times.  Hamade added two singles.  Menard, Moore and Butterfield each had a hit and an RBI. 

Valley City State had nine hits in the game while Dakota State registered five hits.  The Trojans left six runners on base compared to the Vikings four runners left on base.

Kelly Drake (L, 8-14) took the loss in the pitching circle after tossing a complete game for Dakota State.  She allowed eight runs (two unearned) on nine hits.

Butterfield (W, 1-4) earned the victory for Valley City State.  She gave up four runs on four hits in six innings.  Smith pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Game 2:  Valley City State (N.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

Valley City State grabbed their first lead of the game in the second game of the four-game series.  Pautz drilled a triple with two outs and scored home on the same play after the Trojans committed a defensive error, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

Menard produced an RBI single in the top second frame to extend VCSU's lead to 2-0.  The Vikings made it 4-0 after Pautz hit a 2-RBI single.

Lucero led off the bottom half of the second inning with a single for Dakota State.  Tatum Ronke smashed an RBI triple to score Lucero as the Trojans scored its first run of the game.  Peyton Brokiewicz recorded an RBI ground out to score Ronke as DSU trailed 4-2.

The Vikings scored once in the top third inning.  With runners on third and first bases, Tatum Lundin scored home on a stolen base while Morgan Nalley swiped to second base for VCSU 5-2 lead.

DSU answered back with one run scored in the bottom third inning.  Stewart reached on base by VCSU's defensive miscue.  After a wild pitch by the Vikings to advance Stewart to second base, Lucero hit a single as Stewart advanced to third base.  Ronke produced an RBI single to score Lucero as Dakota State cut Valley City State's lead to 5-3.

Lucero blasted a triple to lead off the bottom fifth frame for the Trojans.  Emma Marsh reached on base by a walk with two outs.  Drake recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Lucero as the Trojans reduced their deficit by one run at 5-4.

VCSU plated twice in the top sixth inning.  Pautz led off with a double.  Moore reached safely after DSU's defensive error and advanced Pautz to third base.  Lundin recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Pautz to give Valley City State a 6-4 lead (Moore advanced to third base on the same play).

Moore stole for home to extend Vikings' lead to 7-4 in the top sixth while Lundin was caught stealing at second base.

The Vikings made it 8-4 in the top seventh after Moore hit an RBI single.

DSU left a runner on first base when the game ended, securing the victory for Valley City State.

Lucero was 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple, two singles and scored twice for Dakota State.  Ronke added a triple, two singles and collected two RBIs.  McFadden had three singles.  Schmell, Stewart and Megan Zephier each had a hit.

Pautz was 4-of-5 with a triple, double, two singles and tallied two RBIs for the Vikings.  Moore added a single and an RBI.  Menard had two hits and an RBI.  Hamade, Smith, Nalley, Anderson and Butterfield each had a hit.  Nalley, Moore, Hamade, Butterfield and Lundin each swiped one base.

Both teams registered 12 hits in the game.  The Trojans committed five defensive errors compared to the Vikings two defensive errors.  VCSU left 13 runners on base while DSU had 10 runners left on base.

Kaysea Luna (L, 5-14) recorded the loss in the pitching circle for DSU.  She worked for 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (two unearned) on six hits.  Drake tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs (one unearned) on six hits.

Ashley Metcalif (W, 4-7) tabbed a victory for VCSU.  She pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on nine hits.  Butterfield worked for one out in relief.  Smith (S, 1) earned the save after tossing two scoreless inning, scattering just three hits.
