RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Dakota State University cross country teams ran in the DAC Championship meet at the Robbinsdale Park Friday, hosted by South Dakota School of Mines. The men's cross country team made history as they captured their first ever DAC Conference championship. The women's team finished fourth.
Dakota State, No. 20 in the latest NAIA Men's Cross Country poll, came on top over No. 13 Black Hills State by a wide margin, 22 to 51. The Trojans ended the Yellow Jacket's six consecutive men's DAC team title. As a result, the Trojans earned an automatic bid as a team to the NAIA Men's Cross Country Championship meet.
It was the first time since 1996 (SDIC) the Trojan men's had captured a cross country team championship.
South Dakota School of Mines finished third with 82 points followed by Dickinson State (99), Minot State (118) and Jamestown (153).
The Trojans had five runners placed in the top 15. Tyler Van Peursem captured the individual title with a time of 27 minutes and 29.09 seconds. Anthony Drealan came in third with a time of 27:41.91. Devon Berkness finished fourth in 27:47.39 and Matt Fideler came in fifth in 27:50.85. Andrew Manning placed ninth in 28:19.02.
Other Trojan place finishers were: Ben Harrison, 18th, 29:00.64; Michael Hoffman, 26th, 30:24.25; Kyle Sanderson, 30th, 31:17.81; Cody Foreman, 33rd, 31:25.47; John Bintliff, 40th, 33:05.16 and Andy Quenzer, 43rd, 33:58.59.
Black Hills State women's team captured the DAC team title with 34 points. Jamestown finished second with 61 points, followed by Dickinson State 70 points, Dakota State 79 points, Minot State 102 points and South Dakota School of Mines 159 points.
Stephanie Warnke finished sixth for the Trojans with a time of 20 minutes and 24.27 seconds. Samantha Warnke placed 15th in 21:12.44. Clarice Bauer came in 17th with a time of 21:18.64 and Brittany Young finished 18th in 21:22.46. Suzanne Swett finished 23rd in 22:00.51.
The NAIA Cross Country National Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21st in Vancouver, Wash.
