MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) could not hold on to their lead in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Thue Softball Complex.  The Vikings held on to a 13-9 slugfest victory and shut down the Trojans 15-0 in five innings to complete their four-game series sweep.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 14-33 and finished their North Star conference schedule with a 5-21 record.  Valley City State recorded their fifth straight win to improve their overall record to 19-25 and 10-12 NSAA conference record.

The Trojans play their third straight doubleheader in three days Monday evening.  Dakota State hosts their in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) in the 'Strike-Out for Cancer' game.  First game of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. at Thue Softball Complex.  Valley City State returns home on Saturday for a doubleheader versus Jamestown (N.D.).

Game 1 – Valley City State (N.D.) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 9 – FINAL

The Vikings earned the first lead of the game in the top first inning.  Jayme Menard hit a single with one out.  She advanced to second base after a passed ball committed by DSU.  Cassie Pautz produced an RBI single to score Menard for VCSU 1-0 lead.

Dakota State answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the first frame.  Kailee McFadden led off with a double.  Kayla Schmell reached on base by a walk.  Tatum Ronke reached safely on a fielder's choice, setting up a bases loaded situation with two outs for the Trojans. 

Peyton Brokiewicz produced a 2-RBI single to score McFadden and Schmell as the Trojans earned a 2-1 lead.  Emma Marsh reached on base caused by VCSU's defensive error, allowing Ronke to score for 3-1 DSU lead.

The Vikings scored three times in the top third inning, including a pair of runs scored caused by Trojans' defensive miscue.  Valley City State overtook the lead at 4-3 before entering the bottom third.

DSU plated two runs in the bottom third to regain their lead.  Nicole Stewart hit a double.  A wild pitch committed by VCSU advanced Stewart to third base.  Brokiewicz hit an RBI single to score Stewart as the Trojans knotted the game at 4-4.  Marsh followed that up with an RBI double to score Brokiewicz as Dakota State earned a 5-4 lead.

The fourth lead change of the game occurred in the top fourth inning where the Vikings scored four times for an 8-5 lead.  The Trojans committed four defensive errors in the top fourth inning.

Menard hit an RBI single to extend Valley City State's lead to 9-5 in the top fifth frame.

Valley City State hit three doubles by Kelli Moore, Emily Smith and Kadie Anderson in the top sixth inning, producing a 4-run inning to expand their lead to 13-5.

DSU responded back with four runs scored in the bottom sixth inning.  McFadden and Schmell recorded back-to-back walks.  Stewart followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.

Jasmin Lucero hit a 2-RBI single to score McFadden and Schmell as Dakota State trailed at 13-7 in the bottom sixth (Stewart advanced to third).  Ronke drilled an RBI double to score Stewart to reduce DSU's deficit down to five runs at 13-8.  Caitlin Murray added an RBI single to score Ronke as the Trojans trimmed VCSU's lead to 13-9.

Both teams did not score a run in the final inning, securing the victory for the Vikings.

Lucero and Marsh each had two hits and drove in two runs for Dakota State.  Brokiewicz added two singles and tallied three RBIs.  Stewart had a double and a single.  McFadden and Ronke each recorded a double.  McFadden, Schmell, Stewart and Ronke each scored twice.  Murray had a single and an RBI.  Kelly Drake had a single.

Anderson was 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single and collected three RBIs for Valley City State.  Smith added three singles.  Menard had two hits and an RBI.  Kelsey Hamade had a hit and an RBI.

Both teams had 12 hits in the game.  The Trojans committed seven defensive errors compared to the Vikings one defensive miscue.  VCSU left eight runners on base while DSU had seven runners left on base.

Drake (L, 8-15) recorded the loss despite tossing a complete game for Dakota State.  She gave up 13 runs (10 unearned) on 12 hits. 

Morgan Nalley started the game for Valley City State and pitched the first three innings.  She allowed five runs (one unearned) on five hits.  Smith (W, 2-0) earned the victory after working in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings in relief.  She limited the Trojans to just two hits.  Kathleen Gallais worked in the sixth inning after giving up four runs on four hits.

Game 2 – Valley City State (N.D.) 15, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/5 innings

Holding a 2-0 lead through the first three innings in the four-game series finale, Valley City State exploded for a combined 13 runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

The Vikings' offense roared with eight-run explosion in the top fourth inning, highlighted by Tatum Lundin's grand slam.  VCSU led 10-0 after the fourth inning.  Valley City State added five more runs in the top fifth inning and never looked back.

Schmell was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State.  McFadden, Stewart, Marsh and Kaysea Luna each added a hit.

Lundin was 3-of-4 with a grand slam, two singles, three stolen bases and earned four RBIs for Valley City State.  Hamade went perfect 3-of-3 with three singles and scored three times.  Anderson, Haley Butterfield, Menard and Pautz each had two hits.

VCSU outhit DSU 16-6.  The Vikings had 11 runners left on base while the Trojans had 6 runners left on base.

Luna (L, 5-15) took the loss in the pitching circle for DSU.  She tossed five innings and gave up 15 runs (4 unearned) on 16 hits.  She struck out five VCSU's batters.

Ashley Metcalf (W, 5-7) pitched a complete game win for VCSU.  She limited the Trojans to six hits.
