NAIA OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD NATIONALS SCHEDULE

Dakota State (S.D.) is sending a total of nine athletes to the 66th Annual Men's and 37th Annual Women's National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.  The Trojans will be sending Kylie Martin from the women's team, while a total of eight men's athletes will be competing at the national meet which is set to start Thursday.  The Trojans have the most men's qualifiers from the North Star Athletic Association conference at the NAIA outdoor national meet.

2017 NAIA Men's & Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships Preview
The 66th annual Men's and 37th annual Women's National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will take place in Gulf Shores, Ala. and run from May 25-27.  The Gulf Shores (Ala.) and Orange Beach Sports Commission in partnership with the city of Gulf Shores, will serve as hosts for the fourth straight-year.  Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium will be the home for the three days for the student-athletes.  Seventy-one events will take place over the three-day span.  The national championships begin at 10 a.m. (Central Time) Thursday with the men's decathlon and the women's hammer throw.  The championship opening ceremonies are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, while the awards ceremony will be on Saturday at approximately 6:30 p.m.  The top eight athletes in each event and top eight relay teams will earn team points and achieve NAIA-ASICS All-American status.  Gulf Shores, Ala. is the 22nd different city to host the championship event, which began in 1952 with men's competition.  The NAIA will be recognizing the seniors on Friday evening at 5:15 p.m.

Martin to kick off NAIA National meet with women's hammer throw Thursday for DSU
Kylie Martin will be kicking off the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field national meet Thursday morning at 10 a.m. for Dakota State (S.D.).  This is her second straight year that she will be competing at the national outdoor meet for the Trojans in the hammer throw.  A total of 30 throwers are slated to compete in the event.  Martin is seeded No. 23 overall at the national meet with a mark of 48.98 meters (160 feet, 8 inches).  Her measurement was a personal and DSU women's outdoor track & field school record, which was set at the Sioux City Relays on April 21.  In 2016 NAIA outdoor national meet, Martin placed fifth in the third flight after tossing a distance of 47.11 meters (154 feet, 7 inches) and finished 19th overall at the national meet for the Trojans.

Trojan Men's 4 x 800-Meter Relay Team to run at the national meet
Four Dakota State (S.D.) runners will be running in the NAIA Outdoor Men's 4 x 800-Meter Relay Trials on Thursday evening at 6:15 p.m. (CT).  The relay team members include Corey Hermann, Cameron Harming, Alex Derr and Claudio TejadaMark Moeller was designated as the alternate with the DSU men's 4 x 800-meter relay team.  Hermann, Harming, Derr and Moeller clocked a time of 7 minutes, 48.97 seconds on May 11 at the North Star Athletic Association outdoor conference meet in Jamestown, N.D.  The time is also the second-fastest time in DSU men's outdoor track & field school record book, as well as the North Star conference outdoor meet record.  The time is also just .03 seconds under the NAIA Provisional Standard 'B' Qualifying Time.  There is a total of 26 men's 4 x 800-meter relay teams, vying for the top eight spots in the finals which is scheduled for Friday evening at 5:50 p.m. (CT).

Moeller prepares for men's 800-meter run Friday afternoon for Dakota State (S.D.)
Mark Moeller, a three-time NAIA Track All-American at Dakota State including a pair of Indoor 800-meter run All-American honors as well as the member of the outdoor 4 x 100-meter relay All-American in 2013, is scheduled to run in the men's 800-meter trials on Friday afternoon at 2:20 p.m.  He is seeded No. 15 overall for the national meet with a national qualifying time of 1 minute, 52.47 seconds (where he set that time during the 92nd Annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D. on May 5).  The top eight runners from the trials will advance to the national 800-meter run finals on Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT). 

DSU's Lems to throw discus at NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships
Thirty discus throwers, including Dakota State's (S.D.) Tyler Lems, are scheduled to throw on Friday at 5 p.m. (CT).  Lems posted the national qualifying mark of 47.32 meters (155 feet, 3 inches) on his very first throw at the Mustang Open in Marshall, Minn. on March 31.  His throw also tied for the second-best throw in the DSU Men's Outdoor Track & Field school record book with Craig Sufficool in 1985.  Gary Boettner holds the school record mark of 157 feet, 8.5 inches which was set in 1969. 

Two freshmen runners to compete in national men's full marathon on Saturday morning
Two Dakota State (S.D.) freshmen runners will be competing in the NAIA Men's Full Marathon on early Saturday morning in Gulf Shores.  The full marathon is set to kick off at 6 a.m.  Maxwell Cruse and Braden Curnow will join 75 other men's runners in the marathon race.  Curnow is seeded No. 25 overall with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 33.38 seconds while Cruse is seeded No. 27 with a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes, 36.68 seconds.  Both of those times were set at the Midland (Neb.) Half-Marathon race on March 18 in Fremont, Neb.

North Star Outdoor Conference Meet Recap—Trojan men's soar to second-place finish
Prior to the second day of the North Star Athletic Association conference meet at Al Cassel Field in Jamestown, N.D., Dakota State (S.D.) was sitting at a sixth-place finish in the men's team standings.  On May 12, the Trojans racked up a total of 98 points to accumulate a total of 116 points to claim a runner-up honor in the NSAA conference meet.  It was the most team points scored for the Trojan men's since joining the NSAA conference.  DSU women's team placed sixth overall as a team at the conference meet.  A total of 11 Trojan individuals were honored as All-Conference at the conference meet, including three events with a first-place finish and six runner-up events.  Austin Opdahl became a six-time North Star Men's High Jump champion during the conference outdoor track meet in Jamestown.
