2017 NSAA FOOTBALL PRESEASON POLL

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) collected 36 points and a first-place vote to finish third in the 2017 North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football Coaches' Preseason Poll.  The preseason poll, which was voted by the league's coaches, was announced Monday by the conference office.

Dickinson State (N.D.) was the league's favorite to win the conference title.  The Blue Hawks, who won the conference football title for the last two seasons, registered 47 points with five first-place votes.

Valley City State (N.D.) edged Dakota State by a slim margin of one point in the poll, recording 37 points and a first-place vote to finish second.  Presentation (S.D.) was predicted to finish fourth with 27 points, followed by Jamestown (N.D.) fifth with 25 points.  Mayville State (N.D.) totaled 13 points to place sixth, while Waldorf (Iowa) scored 11 points to finish seventh.

Dakota State finished their 2016 season with a 6-4 overall record, recording three consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1970's.  The Trojans made an appearance in the NAIA's Football Top 25 national poll for six straight weeks, ranking as high as No. 18.  DSU was in a three-way tie for third place in the North Star conference standings with a 3-3 record last season.

To earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Football Playoffs, a team need to be in the 'Top 20' in the national poll and win the conference title.

Ninth-year head coach Josh Anderson and his DSU Trojan Football squad will kick off their 2017 campaign at Trojan Field on Thursday, Aug. 24.  The Trojans host long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) as part of the second annual 'Ag Bowl' game.  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. in Madison.
