ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) faced an opponent that is ranked in the NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 preseason poll for the third time in the last six days Wednesday evening at Bultman Center.  The nationally-ranked No. 13 Northwestern (Iowa) swept the Trojans in three straight sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18.

Dakota State fell to 0-5 overall record.  Northwestern, member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 4-1 overall record.

Knotted at 7-7, the Red Raiders used a 12-4 scoring outburst to grab a 19-11 lead.  NWIA never looked back as they outhit DSU 17-4 for a 25-17 set one victory.

The second set saw a see-saw battle between the Trojans and Red Raiders, with the lead no more than two points by both teams (through the first 30 points with NWIA leading at 16-14).  Northwestern extended their lead to 2-0 after closing the second set with a 25-22 victory.  The Red Raiders hit .298 (21 kills with 7 errors in 47 attempts) compared to the Trojans' .108 hitting efficiency (9 kills with 5 errors in 37 attempts).

Another see-saw battle between DSU and NWIA was featured in the early third set.  Tied at 8-8, the Red Raiders used a 12-3 scoring run for a 20-11 lead.  Northwestern secured the match after winning the third set by the score of 25-18.

NWIA hit .552 (17 kills with 1 error in 29 attempts) in the third set while DSU hit .273 (7 kills with 1 error in 22 attempts).

Samantha Zell led the Trojans with seven kills.  She hit .267 in the match.  Maddie Polzin added five kills.  Gabby Herlyn had four kills.  Rachel Johnson contributed 10 set assists.  Kendra Steffen had eight assists.

Carly Rozell registered two service aces and eight digs for DSU.  Mallory Testerman recorded nine digs.  Zell, Kaylee Spreier and Hanna Hovland each had two block assists.

Three Northwestern players recorded double-figures in kills, led by Anna Kiel with 13 kills.  AJ Horstman posted a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs.  Josie Blankespoor tallied 12 kills and hit .688 in the match.  Lacey Wacker produced 44 assists.

Makenzie Fink earned four service aces and 10 digs for the Red Raiders.  Lauryn Hilger had 13 digs and 9 kills. 

Northwestern outhit Dakota State 55-20 in the match.  The Red Raiders hit .348 (16 errors in 112 attempts) while the Trojans hit .140 (8 errors in 86 attempts). 

NWIA recorded 8 aces and 11 serving errors.  DSU had two aces and four serving errors.  The Trojans had four blocks compared to the Red Raiders three blocks.

Northwestern won the junior varsity match in two straight sets over the Trojans (25-11 and 25-13).

Dakota State continues their action Saturday with three matches scheduled in Mitchell, S.D.  DSU plays in the Corn Palace Classic, starting at 1 p.m. versus Mount Marty (S.D.).  The Trojans face College of Saint Mary (Neb.) at 5 p.m., followed by a night-cap match against host-team Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at 7 p.m.
