MATCH NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK

· Dakota State (S.D.) (1-7 overall record) plays their final tune-up tournament before kicking off the North Star conference season with four matches this weekend.

· The Trojans travel to Omaha, Neb. to play in the College of Saint Mary (Neb.)/Grace (Neb.) Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

DSU TO PLAY ON GRACE (NEB.) CAMPUS FRIDAY

· Dakota State (S.D.) will play at Jim Classen Gymnasium—on the campus of Grace (Neb.) University—for a pair of matches on Friday.  The address to the gymnasium is 810 Pine Street in Omaha, Neb.

· The Trojans open up the tournament versus McPherson (Kan.) (2-1 overall record) on Friday afternoon at 12 noon.  McPherson is from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

· DSU plays Briar Cliff (Iowa) (4-0 overall record) for the second time this season.  First serve is slated for 6 p.m.  BCU swept DSU in three straight sets in their first meeting of the season in the Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa on Aug. 25.

TROJANS CONCLUDE TOURNAMENT AT COLLEGE OF SAINT MARY (NEB.) SAT.

· Dakota State (S.D.) concludes the preseason tournament with a pair of matches at College of Saint Mary (Neb.) campus on Saturday.  The matches will be held at Lied Fitness Center (7000 Mercy Road) in Omaha.

· The Trojans play the host-team College of Saint Mary (3-3 overall record) Saturday morning at 10 a.m.  Both teams are meeting seven days later, where the Flames won the first meeting at the Corn Palace in a five-set thriller on Sept. 2.

· DSU wraps up the tournament with a contest versus William Penn (Iowa) (3-6 overall record) of Heart of America Athletic Conference at 2 p.m.

NO. 13 NWIA DEFEATS DSU IN THREE SETS

· Dakota State (S.D.) faced an opponent that is ranked in the NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll for the third time in a span of six days on Aug. 30.

· No. 13-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) swept the Trojans in three straight sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18.

· Samantha Zell led the Trojans' offense attack with seven kills.  Maddie Polzin added five kills.  Rachel Johnson contributed 11 set assists, while Kendra Steffen had 8 assists.

· NWIA outhit DSU 55-23 in the match.  The Trojans had four blocks compared to the Red Raiders three blocks.

TROJANS HIT SEASON HITS IN FIRST VICTORY

· Dakota State (S.D.) smashed a season high 54 kills in 3-1 victory over in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) at the Corn Palace on Sept. 2.  It was the first victory of the season for DSU.

· After dropping the first set by the score of 25-23, the Trojans won the next three sets by the scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-21.

· DSU also hit a season-high .259 in the match (54 kills with 18 errors in 139 attempts).  The Trojans held the Lancers to .146 hitting percentage (50 kills with 29 errors in 144 attempts).

· The Trojans accumulated 13 blocks in the match while the Lancers had 4 blocks.

· Carly Rozell led DSU with a season-high 20 kills.  She hit .311 in the match.  Maddie Polzin added 11 kills and hit .320.  Samantha Zell had 10 kills (.450 hitting percentage).

· Rachel Johnson produced 27 assists for the Trojans.  Kendra Steffen had 13 assists.

· Mallory Testerman led the DSU's defense with 15 digs.  Polzin and Johnson each had nine digs.

· Rozell had two service aces, four solo blocks and three block assists for Dakota State.  Zell added three solo blocks and four block assists. 

· DSU and MMC will meet two more times during the season (home-and-away series).

DSU FALLS SHORT TO FLAMES & TIGERS

· Dakota State (S.D.) could not convert their two match point opportunities as they fell short to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) in the second match of the Corn Palace Classic on Sept. 2.

· The Flames won by the scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 16-25 and 18-16 over the Trojans.

· CSM outhit DSU 57-48 in the match.  Dakota State had a season-high 16 blocks compared to College of Saint Mary 8 blocks.

· Two DSU players recorded double figures kills, led by Carly Rozell with 15 kills and Samantha Zell with 10 kills.  Rachel Johnson had a double-double of 19 assists and 14 digs.  Kendra Steffen had 15 assists.

· Kaylee Spreier registered three solo blocks and four block assists for the Trojans.  Zell had two solo blocks and five block assists.  Rozell recorded two solo blocks and seven block assists in the match.

· The Trojans could not bounce back in the winning column in the night cap, dropping a 4-set contest to host-team Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) by the scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-16.

· DWU hit .288 in the match (50 kills with 14 errors in 125 attempts) compared to DSU .137 hitting percentage (48 kills with 28 errors in 146 attempts).

· Three DSU players recorded double-digit kills in the match.  Maddie Polzin and Rozell each had 13 kills.  Zell added 10 kills.

· Johnson collected 21 assists, while Steffen had 17 assists for DSU.  Rozell led DSU's defense with 13 digs.

· Assists (Assists Per Set):  Rachel Johnson—136 assists (4.7 assists per set)

· Digs (Digs Per Set):  Mallory Testerman—84 digs (3.2 digs per set)

· Blocks/Blocks Per Set:  Samantha Zell23 blocks (0.8 blocks per set)

· Receptions:  Carly Rozell—152 receptions

TROJANS TRIO BLOCKERS

· Three Dakota State (S.D.) players had recorded over 20.0 blocks this season. 

· Samantha Zell leads the Trojans with 23.0 blocks this season (6 solo blocks and 17 block assists).  Carly Rozell have 22.0 blocks (8 solo, 14 assists), followed by Kaylee Spreier with 21.0 blocks (5 solo, 16 assists).

· Zell and Rozell each average 0.8 blocks per set for the Trojans.  Spreier averages 0.7 blocks per set.

· Zell and Rozell each rank ninth-best among North Star in blocking per set category.  Spreier ranks 12th in the NSAA for DSU.
