MADISON, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) held Dakota State (S.D.) to .073 hitting percentage Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse as the Trojans suffered a 3-1 home opener defeat.  The Tigers won by the scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-21, earning a season series sweep over the Trojans.

Dakota State fell to 2-11 overall record.  Dakota Wesleyan improved their overall record to 11-4.  The Tigers won the first meeting of the season 10 days earlier (Sept. 2) at the Corn Palace in four sets.

The Trojans roared to a 5-0 opening lead, thanks to four kills by three different hitters (Carly Rozell, Kaylee Spreier and Jazmayne Williams) and forced DWU to call their first timeout.  DSU continued their scoring surge to 10-2 lead.

Dakota Wesleyan went on a 23-9 scoring tear, including 12 consecutive points, to win the first set by the score of 25-19 and 1-0 match lead.  The Tigers hit .219 in the opening set (11 kills with 4 errors in 32 attempts), while the Trojans had 12 kills with 9 errors in 46 attempts for a hitting percentage of .065.

Both DWU and DSU went on a see-saw battle in the second set.  The Trojans had a 19-15 lead before the Tigers rallied back with four straight points to knot the score at 19-19.  At 24-23 set point for the Trojans, Spreier smashed a kill to secure the second set for DSU at 25-23 and tied the match at 1-1.

Dakota Wesleyan outhit Dakota State 13-6 in the third set, cruising to a 25-13 victory and 2-1 match lead.  The Tigers committed just one attack error in 28 attempts (.429 hitting percentage).  The Trojans had 10 attack errors in 32 attempts for a minus .125 hitting efficiency.

Tied at 20-20, the Tigers secured the match by using a 4-1 scoring run for a 25-21 victory.  DWU hit .136 (13 kills with 7 errors in 44 attempts) while holding DSU to .040 hitting percentage (12 kills with 10 errors in 50 attempts).

Rozell posted a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs for Dakota State.  Spreier added nine kills.  Maddie Polzin had seven kills.  Williams and Samantha Zell each had five kills.  Kendra Steffen produced 29 assists.  Rachel Johnson had 11 assists.

Alwaise Villa and Willams each contributed 13 digs for the Trojans.  Mallory Testerman registered 10 digs.  Zell had a match-high seven block assists.  Polzin added three block assists.

Steffen and Rozell each recorded two service aces for DSU.

Rebecca Fricke had a double-double of 18 kills and 15 digs for Dakota Wesleyan.  She hit .318 in the match.  Chelsey Heeg added 10 kills.  Emily Brunsing had seven kills.  Bridgett Knobbe had a double-double of 43 assists and 12 digs.  She also had two service aces.

Darby Duncan and Sara Herman each recorded 13 digs for the Tigers.  Brunsing led DWU with four block assists.  Knobbe, Kimberly VanBockern and Sydney Fritz each had three block assists.

DWU outhit DSU 52-45 in the match.  The Tigers hit .259 (16 errors in 139 attempts).  The Trojans committed 33 attack errors in 165 attempts.

Dakota State was 93.7 percent from the serving line (6 aces, 5 errors in 79 attempts) compared to Dakota Wesleyan 92.8 percent (4 aces, 7 errors). 

DWU had 2 solo blocks and 15 block assists (9.5 total blocks), while DSU had 18 block assists (9.0 blocks). 

Dakota Wesleyan swept Dakota State in two straight sets in the junior varsity match (25-21 and 25-13).

Dakota State opens their North Star Athletic Association conference play Thursday evening.  The Trojans visit No. 21-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) with the first serve at 7 p.m.  The match will be held at the Gordon Lozier Center in Bellevue.
