SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) faced its second NAIA Volleyball Top 25 nationally-ranked team Friday evening, visiting Morningside (Iowa) at the RSVC-Allee Gym.  The Mustangs won by the scores of 25-14, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-12.

Dakota State fell to 2-13 overall record.  Morningside, ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, improved to 9-7 overall record.

The Mustangs dominated the opening set by smashing a hitting percentage of .630 (18 kills with just 1 error in 27 attempts), rolling to a 25-14 victory.  The Trojans hit .179 in the first set (9 kills with 4 errors in 28 attempts). 

Morningside opened up with a huge lead before Dakota State rallied back within three points.  The Trojans fell short by the score of 25-22, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.  MC outhit DSU 14-7 in the second set.

Dakota State forced the fourth set after recording a 25-17 set three victory.  The Trojans registered an impressive .375 (15 kills with 3 errors in 32 attempts) while holding the Mustangs to .031 hitting efficiency (8 kills with 7 errors in 32 attempts). 

MC secured the match by hitting .464 in the fourth set (16 kills with 3 errors in 28 attempts), earning a 25-12 victory over DSU.  The Trojans hit .069 in the fourth set (7 kills with 3 errors in 29 attempts).

Carly Rozell led the Trojans with 10 kills.  Jazmayne Williams tallied eight kills.  Rozell and Williams each recorded a hitting percentage of .292.  Kaylee Spreier and Samantha Zell each added six kills.  Zell registered a hitting efficiency of .364.  Gabby Herlyn and Maddie Polzin each had four kills.

Kendra Steffen produced 18 assists for DSU.  Rachel Johnson added 14 assists. 

Williams led Dakota State's defense with nine digs.  Alwaise Villa had eight digs.  Rozell and Villa each recorded a service ace.  Zell had a solo block and a block assist.

Three Morningside players recorded double-digit kills, led by Jayde Bergmann with 19 kills and hit .429 in the match.  Emma Gerber and Krista Zenk each added 11 kills.  Callie Alberico posted a double-double of 48 set assists and 23 digs.  She had four service aces.

Nikki Oberfoell had 12 digs for the Mustangs.  Merrin Van Velzen added 10 digs.  Gerber had three block assists.

Morningside outhit Dakota State 60-38 in the match.  The Mustangs hit .338 (16 errors in 130 attempts) compared to the Trojans' .209 hitting efficiency (15 errors in 110 attempts). 

MC had seven service aces while DSU had two aces.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Tuesday evening.  The Trojans stay on the road as they visit Presentation (S.D.) in the North Star volleyball conference action.  There will be a junior varsity match at 5 p.m., followed by a varsity match at 7 p.m.  The matches are set to take place at the Strode Center in Aberdeen, S.D.
