MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned back to the Trojan Field after a two-game road trip Saturday evening, opening their Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association football conference season versus Mayville State (N.D.).  Holding a 21-10 halftime lead, the Trojans shutdown the Comets 27-6 in the final 30 minutes of the game and cruised to a 48-16 victory.

DSU won their second straight game, raising their overall record to 3-1 and 1-0 record in North Star.  MSU remained winless in three games and 0-1 record in NSAA play.  The Trojans evened up the all-time series record of 14-14 in the 28th meeting Saturday.

Both teams will play their second North Star conference meeting later this season on Nov. 4 in Mayville, N.D.


The Trojans were turned on downs on MSU 36-yard line on the first possession of the game with 12 minutes, 37 seconds on the clock.  Mayville State was forced to punt on their first possession.

Starting at the DSU's 16-yard line, the Trojans marched down the field to earn the first score of the game.  Dakota State registered 8 plays for 84 yards in 3:33 as Jacob Giles threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mason LeightonBrywn Ractliffe added a successful PAT extra-point kick to give DSU a 7-0 lead with 7:30 on the clock.

The Comets recorded 14 plays for 35 yards in 7:18 in the next possession after DSU's touchdown, but was forced to punt for the second time in the first quarter. 


With the Trojans starting their drive with 12 seconds left in the first quarter, DSU scored another touchdown in the early second quarter.  Dakota State used 8 plays for 69 yards in 3:32 as Giles connected to Brendon Waldner for a 9-yard touchdown pass.  Ractliffe hit the PAT extra-point kick to extend Trojans' lead to 14-0 with 11:40 to go in the first-half.

The Comets scored its first point of the game on the ensuing possession.  MSU recorded 9 plays for 47 yards in 4:34 as Jonathan Rodriguez made a 35-yard field goal, trimming DSU's lead to 14-3 with 7:06 on the clock.

Giles threw his third touchdown of the game in the late second quarter, his second touchdown pass to Waldner.  Waldner caught a 48-yard touchdown reception, followed by a PAT extra-point kick from Ractliffe for a 21-3 DSU lead with 3:12 left in the second quarter.  DSU used 5 plays for 69 yards in 1:45 in the scoring drive.

Mayville State answered back with their first touchdown of the game.  Creighton Pfau threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Carillo with 36 seconds left before halftime.  Rodriguez added the PAT extra-point kick as the Trojans maintained a 21-10 lead.


Mayville State was forced to punt after going three-and-out to kick off the third quarter. 

Starting on the DSU's 18-yard line, the Trojans recorded 10 plays for 82 yards in 3:19 as Giles threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game.  He hit a 17-yard touchdown pass to Trever Listman, while Ractliffe added the PAT extra-point kick as DSU's lead ballooned to 28-10 with 9:20 on the clock.  Giles threw a 37-yard pass to Austin Opdahl highlighted the scoring drive for Dakota State.

The Comets went three-and-out for the second time in the third quarter and was forced to punt.

Dakota State scored another touchdown after MSU's punt.  The Trojans used 5 plays for 52 yards in 1:33 as Giles threw his fifth touchdown of the game.  He threw a 12-yard touchdown to Waldner (his third touchdown reception of the game).  Ractliffe made the PAT extra-point kick to extend Trojans' lead to 35-10 with 7:20 to go in the third.

DSU added another touchdown after another three-and-out by the Comets.  Giles recorded his sixth touchdown of the game, an 8-yard touchdown pass to Leighton.  Ractliffe's PAT extra-point kick was good as Trojans expanded their lead to 42-10 with 3:37 left in the third quarter. 

Dakota State shut down Mayville State 21-0 in the third quarter.


Dakota State prevented Mayville State from scoring as Dereck DeVries intercepted Pfau's pass on DSU's 6-yard line to kick off the fourth quarter.

When the Trojans were forced to punt with less than eight minutes to go, Kaden Hight punted from DSU's 29-yard line to MSU 15-yard line but was fumbled by MSU Chris Pope.  DSU's Riley Janke forced the fumble and was recovered by Jeb Sanford as the Trojans maintained their possession on MSU's 4-yard line with 7:15 remaining.

Jared Richardson followed up with a 4-yard touchdown run to extend Trojans' lead with 48-10 with 7:09 left in the game.  Ractliffe's PAT extra-point kick was blocked.

The final score of the game came late in the fourth quarter when Comet Pfau threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Portillo with three seconds left in the game.  Pfau's pass PAT 2-point attempt was intercepted by DSU's Brock Reinhiller.


Giles completed 22 passes in 35 attempts for a total of 314 yards with six touchdown passes for Dakota State.  Jared Richardson was 5-of-8 for 29 yards. 

Brodie Frederiksen ran 16 times for a total of 132 yards for the Trojans.  Daulton Mercer added six rushes for 25 yards.  Richardson had a rushing touchdown.

Eight different players recorded at least a catch in the game for DSU.  Waldner had seven catches for a game-high 106 yards with three touchdowns.  Opdahl added five receptions for 75 yards.  Listman also had five receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.  Leighton recorded four caches for 54 yards and two touchdowns.  Mitchell Galloway had three receptions for 25 yards.  Mercer, Connor Teel and Alex Babcock each also had a reception.

Hight recorded three punts for a total of 146 yards, averaging 48.7 yards per punt for Dakota State.  Two of his three punts went inside the 20-yard line, including a 56-yard punt in the fourth quarter.

Ractliffe was 6-of-7 on PAT extra-point kicks for the Trojans.

Danny Jordan led the Trojans' defense with 10 tackles.  Curt Boeke added nine tackles, 1.5 quarterback sacks and a forced fumble.  Levar Colbert had seven tackles and a half sack.  Ryan Dozier registered a quarterback sack with a loss of 13 yards.  DeVries, Reinhiller, Baily Edwards and John Trout each had five tackles.  Mike McAlistar and Janke each had a forced fumble.

Pfau was 25-of-48 with 183 yards for the Comets.  He had two touchdowns, an interception and was sacked three times.

Pope had seven receptions for 48 yards for Mayville State.  Portillo had five catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.

MSU's Obie Wilder rushed 10 times for 91 yards.  Desmond Earles added 12 rushes for 68 yards.

Sean Perry registered 7 punts for 230 yards, averaging 32.9 yards per punt for the Comets.  Rodriguez had a 35-yard field goal.

Preston Hamlette led Mayville State's defense with eight tackles.  Donte Stevens and Jason McCarl each added seven tackles.  Stevens had a quarterback sack.  Trent Momon recorded an interception.


Dakota State outgained Mayville State 513-337 in total offensive yards.  The Trojans recorded 73 offensive plays compared to the Comets 80 offensive plays.  DSU had 343 passing yards while MSU registered 183 passing yards.  The Trojans ran 30 times for 170 yards.  The Comets rushed 32 times for 154 yards.

DSU had 25 first-downs in the game.  MSU recorded 22 first-downs.

Mayville State had a time possession of 32 minutes, 50 seconds.  Dakota State controlled the ball for 27 minutes, 10 seconds.

The Trojans were 6-of-12 on third-down conversions compared to the Comets' 7-of-18 on third-downs. 


Dakota State remains home next Saturday (Sept. 23) as they host Presentation (S.D.) in the Dacotah Bank/North Star football contest.  Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. as part of the annual Trojan Days' homecoming football game at Trojan Field.

Mayville State returns home next Saturday as they host No. 21-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) at 1 p.m.
