ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to a 2-0 match lead over Presentation (S.D.) Tuesday evening at Strode Center in a North Star Athletic Association volleyball conference contest.  The Saints won the next two sets to force a fifth set, but the Trojans closed the match with an 8-2 scoring tear for a 3-2 thriller on the road.  The Trojans won by the scores of 25-20, 25-19, 24-26, 17-25 and 15-11.

Dakota State halted their four-match losing streak and earned their first North Star conference victory of the season.  The Trojans improved to 3-13 overall record and 1-1 record in NSAA conference play.  Presentation, who opened up the North Star conference play with three straight victories, fell to 12-4 overall record and 3-1 record in North Star.


The Trojans stormed to an 8-2 in the opening set.  The Saints rallied back to knot at 17-17, but DSU closed the first set with an 8-3 run for a 25-20 victory and 1-0 match lead.  Each team had 16 hits in the first set.  DSU hit .311 after committing just 2 attack errors in 45 attempts compared to PC .204 hitting efficiency with 6 errors in 49 attempts.


Dakota State and Presentation went through a see-saw battle through the first 22 points.  Tied at 11-11, the Trojans broke the 11-11 into a 19-13 lead after using an 8-2 scoring outburst.  DSU never looked back as they extended their match lead to 2-0 after recording a 25-19 set two victory.  The Trojans recorded a hitting percentage of .176 (12 kills with 6 errors in 34 attempts), while the Saints were held .059 hitting efficiency (10 kills with 8 errors in 34 attempts).


Despite holding a 16-9 lead in the third set, the Trojans were outscored by the Saints 11-4 for a 20-20 tie.  DSU went on to score four straight points to earn at 24-20 lead.  The Saints saved all four match points and went on to close with a 6-0 scoring run to extend the match into the fourth set.  PC won by the score of 26-24, cutting DSU's match lead to 2-1.  The Trojans hit .220 in the third set (14 kills with 5 errors in 41 attempts) compared to the Saints .140 hitting percentage (12 kills with 6 errors in 43 attempts).


Trailing 9-8 in the fourth set, Presentation went on a 17-8 scoring tear to earn a 25-17 victory to force the fifth and deciding set.  The Saints outhit the Trojans 15-9 in the fourth set.


PC opened up with a 4-1 lead in the fifth set, but DSU answered back with a 9-5 run to overtake a 10-9 lead.  The Trojans extended their scoring run and expanded their lead to 14-11.  DSU secured the match after Carly Rozell recorded a service ace for a 15-11 set five victory and 3-2 match thriller. 


Three Dakota State players posted double-digit kills in the match.  In addition, three DSU players posted a double-double.  Jazmayne Williams smashed 14 kills and collected 22 digs.  Rachel Johnson produced 25 set assists and recorded 11 digs.  Kendra Steffen added 15 assists and 11 digs.

Rozell led the Trojans' offense attack with 16 kills.  Kaylee Sprier had 10 kills.  Samantha Zell added seven kills.

Rozell registered four service aces in the match for DSU.  Maddie Polzin added three aces. 

Zell led Dakota State with five block assists.  Rozell had four block assists.  Gabby Herlyn registered two solo blocks and two block assists.

Both PC setter recorded a double-double, led by Maddie Goetz with 31 assists and 13 digs.  Abigail Wahl added 21 assists and 12 digs. 

Amber Cline led the Saints with 13 kills.  Kayla Wolfe added 12 kills.  Olivia Stet had 10 kills.

Joely Roe contributed a match-high 27 digs for Presentation.  Jade Gallagher had seven block assists and a solo block.  Wolfe and Jordyn Dekker each had five block assists.

PC outhit DSU 60-57 in the match.  The Trojans hit better than the Saints.  DSU recorded a hitting percentage of .196 (22 errors in 179 attempts) compared to PC .153 (31 errors in 189 attempts).

Presentation had 13 team blocks while Dakota State had 12 blocks.  The Trojans produced a season-high 10 service aces compared to the Saints 4 aces.


Dakota State returns home this weekend for a pair of North Star conference matches.  The Trojans host Mayville State (N.D.) with a junior varsity match at 5 p.m. (3 sets to 25 points or win by 2 points), followed by a varsity match at 7 p.m.  Both matches will be held at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.

On Saturday, the Trojans host Valley City State (N.D.) in another North Star contest at DSU Fieldhouse.  First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. as part of Trojan Days' homecoming festivities.
