JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Fifth-seed Dakota State earned a 6-4 lead heading in the top sixth inning versus top-seed Mayville State (N.D.) in the second round of the 2013 NAIA Baseball Unaffiliated Conference Tournament at Jack Brown Stadium. After recording the first two outs of the sixth inning, the Comets exploded for four runs to regain their lead and held on to defeat the Trojans 8-7.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 11-29. Mayville State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Baseball 'Top 25' national poll, raised their overall record to 33-4-1. The NAIA Baseball Unaffiliated Conference Tournament consists of teams from the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) and Frontier conferences.

The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the bottom second inning after recording four consecutive hits with one out. Kevin Madera and Andy Lee hit back-to-back singles. Kyle Braun produced a 2-RBI double to score Madera and Lee as the Trojans grabbed a 2-0 lead. Chaz Palmer added an RBI single to score Braun to extend DSU's lead to 3-0.

The Comets scored twice in the top third frame to trim Trojans' lead to one run. Kurt McCallum recorded an RBI single for MSU's first run of the game. Zach Mihic added an RBI sacrifice fly as DSU's lead was reduced to 3-2.

MSU's McCallum hit an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 in the top fifth inning. The Comets added another run caused by DSU's defensive error to earn a 4-3 lead.

Dakota State answered back with three runs in the bottom fifth frame to regain the lead. Rays Roman opened with a single. Danny Flahie recorded an RBI double to score Rays Roman to tie the game at 4-4. Ryan Bourcier reached on base by a single. Madera added an RBI single to score Flahie as DSU regained their lead at 5-4. Braun hit an RBI single to score Bourcier as DSU's lead grew to 6-4.

Mayville State recorded the first two outs in the top sixth inning. After Spencer Mallonee was hit-by-pitch, the Comets staged a comeback by producing three consecutive hits. Bryan Jacklitch hit a single and advanced Mallonne to third base. Phillip Steer recorded an RBI single to score Mallonne to cut MSU's deficit to 6-5. McCallum hit a 3-run home run as the Comets earned an 8-6 lead.

Both teams did not score in the seventh and eighth innings.

DSU's Bourcier smashed a solo home run (his sixth home run of the season) with one out in the bottom ninth frame to trim Mayville State's lead to 8-7. The Trojans could not add another run as the Comets sealed the victory.

Flahie was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI for the Trojans. Braun added a double, a single and recorded two RBIs. Bourcier had a home run, a single and an RBI. Rays Roman and Madera each had two hits. Palmer recorded a single and two RBIs.  Kyle Holland and Lee each had a single.

McCallum was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run, two singles and five RBIs for Mayville State. Jacklitch, John Pistulka and Steer each added two singles. Dillon Lundin and Mallonee each had a hit.

The Trojans outhit the Comets 14-13 in the game. Both teams committed four defensive errors.

MSU left 11 runners on base. DSU had nine runners left on base.

Austin Weber (3-4) picked up the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs (two unearned) on eight hits. He struck out four MSU's batters. Seth Rockafellow pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He limited the Comets to five hits.

RJ Page started the game for Mayville State. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on 11 hits. Scott Petry (2-0) recorded the victory as he worked for 4 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed one run on three hits. Petry had four strikeouts.

Dakota State will play the winner between Valley City State (N.D.) and Dickinson State (N.D.) game (11 a.m. Thursday morning) on Thursday evening in the loser's out game at 6 p.m. No. 4 seed Valley City State lost to the Trojans 14-13 in 12 innings earlier Wednesday, while Dickinson State suffered a 3-1 contest to No. 2 seed and host-team Jamestown (N.D.). Mayville State and Jamestown will play at 2:30 p.m. in the winner's bracket and a spot in the championship game. The tournament runs through Friday with the championship game set at 3 p.m. (if necessary, the second championship game will be held on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.). All games will be at the Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, N.D.
