MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) maintained a 21-3 lead over Presentation (S.D.) in the second quarter in a rare Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association Football conference contest at a rainy Howard Wood Field Monday afternoon.  The Saints took advantage of Trojans' turnovers in the second half, scoring 19 straight unanswered points for a 22-21 victory.

Dakota State fell to 3-2 overall record, while Presentation improved to 2-2 overall record.  Five teams, including DSU and PC, are in a five-way tie for second-place in the North Star conference standings with a 1-1 record.

FIRST QUARTER

Presentation opened up the game by recording 21 plays for 68 yards in 7 minutes, 34 seconds.  The Saints had to settle in for a 25-yard field goal by Jaiden Machuca for a 3-0 lead with 7:26 on the clock.  PC was 5-for-5 on third-down conversions in the first scoring drive of the game.

DSU went three-and-out on their first possession of the game.

The Trojans regained their possession after Mike McAlistar sacked Saints' quarterback Austin Eggl.  McAlistar also forced the fumble on the same play, while Curt Boeke recovered the ball on PC's 44-yard line with 3:31 to go in the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

Dakota State scored its first points of the game in the early second quarter.  Jacob Giles rushed for a 7-yard touchdown, followed by Brywn Ractliffe's PAT extra-point kick to give DSU a 7-3 lead with 14:17 on the clock.  The Trojans used 10 plays for 44 yards in 4:14 in the scoring drive.

Presentation was forced to punt on the ensuing possession.  Dakota State went on to score on the next possession, recording 9 plays for 76 yards in 4:31.  Brodie Frederiksen rushed for an 11-yard touchdown, while Ractliffe's PAT extra-point kick was successful to widen DSU's lead to 14-3 with 8:51 to go before halftime.

The Saints registered 11 plays for 52 yards in 2:54 on their next drive, turning the ball on downs on DSU's 21-yard line with less than six minutes to go before halftime.

Frederiksen added a 6-yard touchdown run with 43 seconds left for the Trojans.  Ractliffe added a successful PAT extra-point kick to balloon Dakota State's lead to 21-3.  The Trojans posted 12 plays for 79 yards in 5:14 for their third scoring drive of the second quarter.

Presentation quickly answered back with a touchdown with less than five seconds before intermission.  Facing third-and-10 situation on their own 29-yard, Eggl threw a 35-yard pass to Dylan Paulson to DSU's 36-yard line.

After a 7-yard reception by Saint Joe Davis to DSU's 29-yard line, the Trojans were committed a penalty to move the ball to DSU's 14-yard line.  Eggl followed up with a 13-yard pass to Logan Weisser and called a timeout with eight seconds before halftime on DSU's 1-yard line.

Innocent Okuh ran for a 1-yard touchdown, followed by Paulsen's PAT extra-point kick as PC trimmed DSU's lead to 21-10 with four seconds remaining before halftime.

Dakota State outscored Presentation 21-7 in the second quarter.

THIRD QUARTER

Dakota State was forced on their first possession in the third quarter.

Presentation recorded 11 plays for 68 yards in 2:59 as Machuca hit a 32-yard field goal with 11:08 on the clock.  The Trojans maintained a 21-13 lead.

Saint Anointe Marshall intercepted Giles' pass on PC's 33-yard line and returned it for 35-yards to DSU's 32-yard line.  Presentation answered with another field goal by Machuca, making a 31-yard field goal as the Saints trimmed Trojans' lead to 21-16 with 7:34 to go in the third quarter.

After a 70-yard kick-off return by Brendon Waldner, Dakota State was unable to extend their lead as Casey Bourque missed a 39-yard field goal.  The ball hit the left goal post as PC regained possession with 4:25 on the clock.

The Saints was forced to punt on the ensuing possession.  DSU's Wyatt Sanford blocked PC Paulsen' punt and the Trojans recovered the ball on PC's 15-yard line with less than three minutes to go in the third quarter.

DSU was unable to convert their scoring chance from PC's turnover as Ractliffe missed a 33-yard field goal attempt with 1:40 on the clock.

FOURTH QUARTER

Following DSU's missed field goal, the Saints started the fourth quarter by adding another field goal.  Machuca made a 19-yard field goal as Presentation cut Dakota State's lead to 21-19 with 14:52 remaining in the game.  PC used 9 plays for 78 yards in 1:48 for their scoring drive.

Dakota State moved the ball from their own 35-yard line to PC's 7-yard line (9 plays for 58 yards in 3:14) before committing a turnover in the end zone.  Giles' pass was intercepted by PC Alex Karp and he returned it for 20 yards to PC 21-yard line with 11:38 remaining in the game.

Presentation regained their lead at 22-21 by using 10 plays for 59 yards in 3:30 as Machuca made a 37-yard field goal with 8:08 left.  The highlight in this scoring drive was a fake punt attempt by the Saints, where Paulson ran for 28 yards on a fourth-and-six situation on DSU's 46-yard line.

The Trojans started their drive on DSU's 42 yard line after a 25-yard kick-off return by Waldner.  DSU used 9 plays for 58 yards in 3:35 as they committed another turnover in the end zone.  Dakota State fumbled the ball in the end zone and was recovered by the Saints with 4:33 remaining in the game.

When PC was forced to punt from PC's 24-yard line, Dakota State committed their third turnover of the fourth quarter.  DSU fumbled the ball during punt return and was recovered by the Saints on DSU's 42-yard line with 2:42 remaining in the game.

Presentation secured the game by converting the fourth-and-two situation on DSU's 34-yard line, a 3-yard rush by Edmond Jacobs for a first-down.

PC shut down DSU 12-0 in the final 30 minutes of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Frederiksen rushed 31 times for 139 yards with two touchdowns for the Trojans.  It was the third straight game that he had rushed over 100 yards.  Frederiksen also had a catch for 21 yards.

Giles completed 17 passes in 29 attempts for a total of 216 yards and a rushing touchdown for DSU.  He had two interceptions in the game.

Austin Opdahl caught seven passes for 80 yards for Dakota State.  Trever Listman added four receptions for 49 yards.  Waldner had three catches for 29 yards.  Alex Babcock recorded two catches for 37 yards.

Waldner had four kick-off returns for a total of 136 yards for the Trojans.  Mitchell Galloway also had a kick-off return of 40 yards.

Ryan Dozier led DSU's defense with 11 tackles.  Boeke added nine tackles and a fumble recovery.  Michael Cleveland and Baily Edwards each had eight tackles.  McAlistar had seven tackles, including two quarterback sacks.  He also registered 4.0 tackles-for-loss of 10.7 yards.  Cleveland and Dereck DeVries each had three broken-up passes.

Eggl went 30-of-54 for 268 yards for Presentation.  Logan Weisser had 11 passes for 110 yards.  William Moffet added seven receptions for 54 yards.  Joe Davis had five catches for 36 yards.

Okuh ran 17 times for 52 yards with a touchdown for the Saints. 

Machuca went 5-for-5 on field goals in the game for PC.  He made 37-, 19-, 31-, 32- and 25-yard field goals.

Eric Bell tallied eight tackles for Presentation's defense.  Courtland Drummond, Ty Fox, Gabe Medrano, Sam Wendt and Adail Froome each added seven tackles.  Medrano and Dominic Encinas each had a forced fumble.  Marshall had an interception return of 35 yards, while Karp added an interception return of 20 yards.

TEAM COMPARISONS

Dakota State outgained Presentation 380-374 in total offensive yards.  The Saints had 268 passing yards compared to the Trojans' 216 passing yards.  DSU outrushed PC 164-106.

The Saints registered 25 first-downs in the game compared to Trojans' 20 first-downs.  Presentation converted 11-of-24 third-downs while Dakota State was 10-of-17 on third-down situations.  PC was 2-of-3 on fourth-downs compared to DSU 1-of-1.

Presentation converted all six red zone opportunities (1 touchdown, 5 field goals).  Dakota State was 3-of-6 on red-zone conversions (3 touchdowns).

PC maintained possession of the ball for 31 minutes, 19 seconds.  DSU registered a time possession of 28 minutes, 41 seconds.

UP NEXT

Dakota State heads on the road this Saturday as they visit Jamestown (N.D.) in the North Star conference action.  Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Rollie Greeno Stadium in Jamestown, N.D.

Presentation stays on the road as they visit No. 20-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) Saturday for a North Star conference match-up.  The game is slated to start at 2 p.m. (Central Time)/1 p.m. (Mountain Time).
