October 4, 2017

This Week
The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan women's and men's cross country teams are scheduled to run in the Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational.  The race is slated to take place at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve in McCook Lake, S.D. or located in North Sioux City, S.D. (272 Westshore Drive).  It's the first cross country meet of the month of October for the Trojans, returning back to action since Sept. 23 where they competed in the packed Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minn. (St. Paul area).

About Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational
The annual Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational is held at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve located in McCook Lake, S.D. or near North Sioux City, S.D.  The women's 5K race is set to kick off at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at approximately 10:45 a.m.  The course is made up mostly of crushed rocks, as well as flat and fast.  Numerous teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference and several NCAA Division II schools (University of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Wayne State, Neb.) are expected to run in the cross country meet.  Last season, all fourteen (14) Trojans runners posted season-best times at same Briar Cliff cross country meet on Oct. 8.  Ashley Robinson recorded her personal best time of 21 minutes, 40 seconds at the women's meet for Dakota State.  Braden Curnow, Alex Derr, Maxwell Cruse, Cameron Harming and Jonathan Lein each set personal time marks at the Briar Cliff men's cross country meet for the Trojans.  Derr (27 minutes, 39 seconds) and Cruse (27 minutes, 54 seconds) still held their personal-best time from the Briar Cliff Invitational last season.

Trojans place 40th in packed women's 6K race in Minnesota
Dakota State (S.D.) placed 40th overall in a packed women's 6K race—1K extra than the regular women's 5K race—at the 32nd Annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by NCAA Division I University of Minnesota at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. on Sept. 23.  Over 380 runners competed in the Women's Maroon Division II race, featuring numerous runners up to NCAA Division II level where they faced warm conditions and tough course.  Jacia Christiansen led Dakota State with a 195th-place finish after clocking a time of 26 minutes, 9 seconds.  Andrea Bryant registered a time of 27 minutes, 39 seconds to finish 278th.  Kirsten Paetow was 332nd (29 minutes, 32 seconds), followed by Mallory Aughenbaugh 352nd (31 minutes, 4 seconds) and Lyndsay Pruss 374th (35 minutes) for DSU.

DSU men's runners compete in large Roy Griak Invitational Men's Maroon Division II race
Dakota State (S.D.) men's cross country team returned back to action on Sept. 23.  They ran in a large men's 8K race at the 32nd Annual Roy Griak Invitational Men's Marron Division II race, hosted by NCAA Division I Minnesota.  Over 440 runners completed the race that featured numerous collegiate school levels up to NCAA Division II at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.  The cross country meet did not have DSU listed as a team score as their five runners completed the race.  There was a malfunction timing system at the finish line due to the heat and high humidity, therefore the results are unofficial.  Matthew Dunn led Dakota State with a time of 30 minutes, 23 seconds for a 322nd finish.  Maxwell Cruse followed up with a 344th place finish after clocking a time of 30 minutes, 44 seconds.  Marlowe LaRoche recorded a new personal record time of 31 minutes, 33 seconds to finish 371st for DSU.  Mattheu Cox registered a time of 36 minutes, 14 seconds to place 427th.  Jonathan Lein finished the race, but the cross country meet did not record his time at the finish line due to a malfunction.

Trojan Cross Country remaining meets
Dakota State (S.D.) have two regular-season cross country meets remaining during the month of October.  Both of those cross country meets will be in the state of South Dakota.  The Trojans head to McCook Lake, S.D. on Saturday for the Briar Cliff (Iowa) before wrapping up the regular-season schedule with the Mount Marty (S.D.) Invitational cross country meet in Yankton, S.D. on Oct. 21.  The North Star Athletic Association Cross Country conference championships will be held on Friday, Nov. 3 in Jamestown, N.D.  The NAIA Cross Country National Championships is set for Nov. 18 in Vancouver, Wash.

Regionally Speaking...
Both Dakota State (S.D.) women's and men's cross country teams are fifth in the North Star Athletic Association Cross country conference bi-weekly rankings, released on Sept. 25.  Dickinson State (N.D.) is first in the women's poll, while Valley City State (N.D.) men's cross country team ranks first in the conference poll.  The conference bi-weekly rankings are being used to determine the NAIA's Cross Country Top 25 national rankings.

A Look Ahead
After the Briar Cliff (Iowa) Invitational meet on Saturday, Dakota State (S.D.) won't return back to action until Saturday, Oct. 21.  The Trojans compete in the Mount Marty (S.D.) in the regular-season cross country meet before the postseason conference and national meets in November.  The women's race is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's race to follow at 10:45 a.m.  The cross country meet will be held at Human Services by Highways 81 and 50 in Yankton, S.D.
